These books have been a game changer for our students, sparking a new excitement for reading and learning, just in time for the summer! Graphic novels combine vivid illustrations with text, which helps students develop important literacy skills like visual literacy, comprehension, and making connections between images and words. Through these texts, students learn how to interpret story elements, follow plot development, and infer meaning—skills that build a strong foundation for reading across all subjects. Through discussion of the graphic novels, students have motivating opportunities to build vocabulary and background knowledge alongside friends.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is a dynamic and engaging experience. Students often gather in small groups or cozy corners, eagerly exploring the graphic novels together. They discuss the stories, share their favorite parts, and ask thoughtful questions, which fosters collaboration and critical thinking. Many of our reluctant readers, who usually shy away from traditional books, are especially drawn to these graphic novels. The combination of illustrations and text helps them decode language more easily, boosting their confidence and encouraging a deeper love for reading. Your generous gift will truly transform the ways our students experience stories and literacy in our classroom. My students have gotten so much use out of them! Most recently, we have been studying the perspectives of different people during the American Revolution. Some of the language is complex since it is from the 1700's, and the students have enjoyed having dictionaries to look up the meaning of the words.\r\n\r\nWe have also been working on opinion writing and backing up our ideas with evidence. Students have learned that strong language is imperative for opinion writing, and they have enjoyed using their thesauruses to find exactly the right word that they want to use to convey their opinion.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, students have used the dictionaries to confirm the correct spellings of words. Since dictionaries do not include every form of every word, we have learned a lot about dropping the suffix to find the base word. This has expanded students' understanding of the way words work in English.
