The arrival of the supplies needed to create more activities in our centers was an exciting day. The students have enjoyed exploring new ways to \"exercise their brains\"! \r\n\r\nDuring center time, students have free choice for play. The science center has become more popular with the addition of the STEAM activities supplied by the project. The \"build a dinosaur\" kits were a fast favorite. While students talk and learn more about dinosaurs, they are also using fine motor skills to operate the screwdrivers. This practice helps their handwriting and learning of the alphabet. The process of figuring out which pieces fit where strengthens their spatial awareness and problem solving skills. The learning outcomes for this activity are endless!\r\n\r\nIn the coming weeks, students will begin exploring the bridge and car building kits. These kits fit well into our units about recycling (using found parts) and trees (wooden bridges). Next year, we plan to use these kits in the first semester during our buildings unit.
