My students are using the air fryer, dishes, silverware, cups, bowls, broom and dustpan, mop and bucket, iron, clothing rack, and rug during hands-on lessons designed to teach real-life independent living and job-readiness skills. One of our favorite activities has been setting up our classroom kitchen area. Students practice setting the table, identifying and organizing dishes and utensils, preparing simple foods, cleaning their workspace, and putting materials away when they are finished. They are learning that everyday tasks require responsibility, organization, and teamwork.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, they were excited to see supplies that looked and felt like the items they use at home and may encounter in a workplace. They were especially interested in the air fryer and wanted to know what we would be cooking! The iron and clothing rack have also allowed us to practice important work-readiness skills such as organizing clothing, preparing appropriate work attire, and safely using an iron. The broom, dustpan, mop, and bucket give students the opportunity to practice keeping a space clean and learning that maintaining a clean environment is an important responsibility at home and on the job.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building these skills through structured, hands-on lessons. Students will practice following simple recipes, safely preparing food, setting and clearing a table, washing and organizing dishes, sweeping and mopping, organizing clothing, and ironing appropriate work clothing. We will gradually increase their independence by encouraging them to complete tasks with fewer prompts and to follow steps from beginning to end.
