I try to create a classroom environment where the students are excited to learn everyday. However, going thru back to back hurricanes this year was devastating. Not only did we lose most furniture, all rugs, and all cabinetry, we also lost many of the things our students use daily. Our library was one of those areas that feel victim to Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. \r\n\r\nThis area was one of my biggest concerns because as a Kindergarten teacher I am trying to instill the love of books for the children. I want them to want to be lifelong lovers of reading. All of the bins that the books were organized in were trash. Most of the books were saved, but the shelving was a goner. \r\n\r\nWith the help of our generous donors we were able to bring our library back to life and organize in a better, easier, and kid friendly manner. The shelves that were obtained through this grant will be used for many years to come and will help so many children begin their journey into imagination and loving to read.","fullyFundedDate":1742905047451,"projectUrl":"project/reorganizing-after-the-hurricanes/9159398/","projectTitle":"Reorganizing After the Hurricanes","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hughes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8801175_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1665855725947","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-hughes-islandschool"},{"teacherId":8801175,"projectId":9161502,"letterContent":"Again, I would like to offer my sincere thanks for your donation that helped make a dream for the classroom become a reality. The students were so eager to improve their behavior and earn an opportunity to print something on the classroom 3D printer. \r\n\r\nNot only did the printer bring an awareness to improving themselves, it also all of us... me included the opportunity to learn more about technology and its positive impact in our lives. We have learned that sometimes we don't succeed and sometimes our creations have been greater than what we expected. \r\n\r\nThank you for allowing me to achieve to goals with one piece of equipment. I am still learning a lot about the process. I look forward to acquiring more skills with practice over the summer. Additionally, I look forward to continuing to share an amazing piece of technology with many more students to come.","fullyFundedDate":1742867967996,"projectUrl":"project/positive-behavior-rewarded-with-stem/9161502/","projectTitle":"Positive Behavior Rewarded with STEM","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hughes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8801175_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1665855725947","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-hughes-islandschool"},{"teacherId":8801175,"projectId":9058615,"letterContent":"My students have been back in the classroom for several months now after rebuilding from our hurricane damages. Your donations to our classroom made learning fun again. My students were so excited when packages would arrive. It felt like Christmas as the boxes were opened and the contents were added back to our shelves. Many of the items were our Free Choice time activities for Kindergarten. By far they have enjoyed new animals to play the building of a zoo. \r\n\r\nOne of my favorite stories to share is about the cash register and play food. Our school has an annual fundraiser of a Chowder Dinner. Local businesses create a soup and the community comes to eat and be entertained. The week after the Chowder Dinner, it was so sweet listening to their imaginative play in the kitchen center. They were creating and serving Chowder Dinners to their teacher and classmates. One student would take orders, one would take payment, several were cooking, and several were serving. At 5 and 6 years old, it was endearing to see the students using these new supplies in a sweet manner. Your generosity made this play possible. Thank you is a small gesture to express a BIG impact your donation made.","fullyFundedDate":1738003768201,"projectUrl":"project/natural-disasters-wont-stop-us-from-lea/9058615/","projectTitle":"Natural Disasters Won't STOP US From Learning!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hughes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8801175_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1665855725947","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-hughes-islandschool"},{"teacherId":8557535,"projectId":8513546,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation to our Donors Choose project this school year. Our 2nd graders could not wait to dive into the fun centers that arrived just after we returned from our extended time off from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Your kindness and generosity taught my students that there are wonderful people who give without expecting anything in return. One child said that is what he wants to do one day. \r\n\r\n With our classroom in disarray these centers provided a welcome comfort and necessary practice for the skills that needed to be practiced. The games have been a big hit. As they are sharpening skills with fractions, money, digraphs, and story elements previous gaps are beginning to close. \r\n\r\nAfter Hurricane Milton we were temporarily relocated to an off-site location while our school was restored to a safe, workable environment. These centers and the activities I purchased from Teachers Pay Teachers were able to provide fun and engaging opportunities for my students to continue to grow and learn.","fullyFundedDate":1729532403299,"projectUrl":"project/knowledge-hub-where-learning-happens/8513546/","projectTitle":"Knowledge Hub-Where Learning Happens!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. McKenzie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8557535_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1666461774894","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/susan-mckenzie"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_69629","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":66,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":58,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":91,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"7.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":80.0,"schoolId":69629,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about The Island School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"The Island School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/the-school-district-of-lee-county/island-school/69629"}
