Our families waited patiently for the sky to darken so that everyone could see the movie projection. People set up their blankets and chairs on our PE lawn area. It was a pleasant and clear evening. Children were introducing their friends to their parents. Parents were talking with each other from their spots. Teachers brought their children to attend. It was a marvelous occasion of community.\r\n\r\nWe had snack stations run by teacher volunteers so that children could redeem tokens for popcorn, snow cones, candy, or drinks. It was a complete movie theater experience. Once the screen lit up with the show, a hush was heard and everyone settled in for Encanto.\r\n\r\nMany of our families have Hispanic heritage. It was clear that they appreciated seeing\r\nthemselves represented in our movie selection.\r\n\r\nWe plan to use this equipment for many years to come as a way to build connections across our school community and provide joyful memories associated with our elementary school.\r\n\r\nThank you for supporting our outdoor movie theater project.","fullyFundedDate":1725919678607,"projectUrl":"project/if-you-give-children-popcorn-they-will/8716878/","projectTitle":"If You Give Children Popcorn, They Will Want a Movie","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8535722_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1715514147412","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/laura-bell"},{"teacherId":8535722,"projectId":8390550,"letterContent":"We started with \"sad\", \"mad\", and \"happy\", but eventually the students were using more complex and nuanced words for labeling their emotions. This project included a color coded map of emotions, a feelings-actions sentence building flip chart, and colorful molding beads. We found the chart useful for a quick initial check in for each student. The preschool students liked to point to an emoji in each color zone. Because, they explained in their own way, that they were feeling all of the feelings at the same time. They are probably the most emotionally in tune of us\r\nall.\r\n\r\nFor my older students with autism, these activities occurred in our small therapy room at a time when they were not actually experiencing the emotions or social scenarios we were examining. This gave them a safe time and space to develop a way to talk about their feelings and practice how to handle social emotional situations that will likely occur some time in their near future.\r\n\r\nAll ages appreciated the I Can't Forget a Face game. The multi-cultural drawings of young\r\nchildren afforded us the opportunity to discuss other parts of the world, different climates and clothing, as well as practice speaking unfamiliar names.\r\n\r\nThank you for supporting this project","fullyFundedDate":1715725564182,"projectUrl":"project/i-feel-when-i-can-teaching-the-languag/8390550/","projectTitle":"I Feel -When-I Can: Teaching the Language of Emotions","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8535722_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1715514147412","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/laura-bell"},{"teacherId":8535722,"projectId":8763103,"letterContent":"We combined these materials with sentence building and storytelling activities. First, I modeled how to use the voice styles, like robot, news reporter, and opera singer. Then, the students chose a voice to use when saying a sentence or story. So many giggles and smiles. The children enjoyed this.\r\n\r\nThere was also practice with using rising pitch, flat tone, or \"loud\" talking when using a question, sentence, or exclamation punctuation mark in sentences. The picture cue cards from this set helped cue the students for how to do this. We know moments like this create long lasting memories that connect sensations with emotions and understanding that making good choices for how to act is valued by our entire school community.\r\n\r\nThis popcorn machine and supplies have been used for many purposes throughout the year. Our staff enjoyed a popcorn snack one day. Many families attended our outdoor movie event and munched on popcorn as they watched Encanto. Going out to the movies and purchasing snacks is expensive. Our families were so appreciative of an opportunity to gather for this fun event with a variety of people associated with our school. The hot popped buttered popcorn was oohed and aahed over. It was handled like a golden treasure!\r\n\r\nOur maintenance supervisor takes great care in cleaning and storing our popcorn machine set up. There are a few staff members with experience making popcorn with the machine. We have an ongoing debate about the best technique for popping up a tasty batch; how much oil, when to shake on the seasoning. We have our opinions. Maybe we will have a blind taste test to see who has it right.\r\n\r\nThank you for your support of this project","fullyFundedDate":1725192815460,"projectUrl":"project/positive-behavior-smells-like-buttered-p/8713883/","projectTitle":"Positive Behavior Smells Like Buttered Popcorn","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8535722_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1715514147412","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/laura-bell"},{"teacherId":8535722,"projectId":8359687,"letterContent":"Can you believe that most of my students had never heard of Goldilocks and The Three Bears or The Three Little Pigs! Seriously. Never. One of the things I love about my job is seeing children experience something I know well for their first time. What a delight.\r\n\r\nThese stories fit perfectly into the constraints of speech language therapy sessions. They were quick, repetitive, and full of rich vocabulary. These robust resources, books and felt story boards, were useful for teaching my students how to organize their thoughts into a logical sequence, make inferences about the motives of the characters, and create sentences with\r\ndescriptive details.\r\n\r\nThese lessons were a great launching point for exploring how these classic stories have been adapted by a variety of cultures. We read the Three Javelinas storybook as well as Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs. \r\n\r\nWe had so much fun learning and developing speech-language skills with these resources.\r\nI can see how I will expand on utilizing these books and felt board kits in the future.
