Many of these books were new to students so they were actively engaged in listening to them read aloud during whole group instruction. Students were able to identify and describe the main story elements in the texts and completed a variety of summarizing activities to demonstrate their understanding. Students created get well cards, decorated bags, and stuffed them with different items for children in our local hospital. Each student got to go \"shopping\" and select items from the stash to fill up a bag for another child their age that would be spending time in a hospital room during the holidays. Students chose from coloring books, stuff animals, playing cards, writing tablets and journals, and other fun items that would help entertain young children. These bags were delivered to our local hospital and handed out to patients during the holiday season. \r\nMy students were so excited to participate in this community service project. They realized that they were spreading joy and kindness to others during a difficult time in someone's life.
