Since our books have come in, we have reorganized the entire library. Students are easily able to find the new books of interest and not only has the motivation for reading increased, but the monthly reading assessments scores have also increased! The students agree that they are reading more and that is contributing to their test successes. \r\nFrom approaching readers to readers who are at levels beyond the second-grade expectation, every student is now afforded more choice for independent reading time. I get to hear readers softly sounding out words, speaking in the expression of the character's voices or thinking aloud as to how a mystery will be solved...it's a joy to both see and hear the growth of these students as they engage in the text and are continually wanting the next book to read! \r\nThank you for placing smiles on the faces of these eager readers! Students were so excited to choose a book to start reading right away. It was even nice to see them take turns over the favorite books that many of them were choosing. When students finish their work early, they are also welcome to get a book out and read. Students have been focused on getting their work done and staying motivated so that they can get reading the book they have chosen from your kind donations. My students are SO EXCITED to have a dedicated STEM kit for each team. We were able to have two teams. We attended our very first FLL (Florida Lego League) Qualifier. Out of 29 teams we came in14th and 17th place for Robot Missions. For our first time, the kids rocked it! It was a great experience for all of us. We were able to get our judges feedback and comments. The competition is scored in 4 parts. My students are ready to tackle the feedback and make improvements. We have a Pinellas County Scrimmage that our teams will compete at so test out their improvements. I am so proud of these students, the judges continuously complimented them on their attitudes. They had a lets go for it, be a risk taker and if it didn't work out, that is okay. That means we learned something and they still got to keep their highest points. Each team had to present an innovation project in front of judges. The judges were impressed with collaboration skills and they could tell they were in it together as a team. FLL has core values to focus on and teams are scored on. One of them is coopertition, being positive, encouraging, and helpful to other teams. Both of our teams scored high with core values. Before a Robot Mission match, they were sure to high five the other team and wish them luck. The great thing about the STEM Lego Prime challenge kits is they will be used over and over to continue to promote STEM problem-solving thinking, coding, engineering, and perseverance. Our next steps is to acquire two STEM Lego Prime Challenge Extension packs. We have two teams I meet on a different day that were not able to participate in FLL competition because of lack of resources.
