These books have become such a natural part of our classroom. Our National Parks books, both fiction and nonfiction, fit perfectly with the adventure and exploration theme of our room, but more importantly, they have given my students another way to connect what we are learning to the world outside our classroom. We can look through maps, photographs, and informational texts to practice finding evidence and making connections, while the National Park mysteries and adventure stories let students experience those same places through characters and stories.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite parts of this project has been watching students find books that actually make them want to read. The boxed sets and familiar series have been especially popular because once a student connects with one book, there is another one waiting for them. Students who might not immediately reach for a nonfiction book will pick up the \"I Survived\" series, the \"Wild Robot\" series, a graphic novel or a National Park adventure, and suddenly they are reading, talking about books with their classmates, and asking what they should read next! Having so many different genres and reading levels on our shelves means that more students can find something that feels like it was put there just for them.\r\n\r\nThese books have helped make our classroom feel like a place where reading, science, curiosity, and exploration belong together. They are used during independent reading, when students finish work early, and as resources when our learning connects to the natural world. Most importantly, they have helped me create the kind of classroom library I hoped for: one where students don't just walk past, but actually pull books from every day.
