Students worked together in small groups to create place value charts and number lines to show how they rounded numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. The large writing surface allowed them to share their thinking and discuss their math strategies.\r\n During our addition and subtraction unit, students eagerly used the whiteboard to show their algorithms. They had plenty of room to show each step of their work, make corrections, and learn from one another. \r\n As we have moved into multiplication and division, the table has remained a favorite learning space. Students use it to model multiplication and division problems by drawing arrays, creating pictures of equal groups, and representing real-world word problems. They are also using fact triangles to explore multiplication and division fact families and better understand the relationship between the multiplication and division. \r\n The greatest compliment I receive is when students tell me that the \"Mrs. Hudson Center\" is their favorite center in the classroom. They get excited when it is their turn to work at the whiteboard table because it gives them an opportunity to collaborate with peers, share their thinking, and actively engage in their learning. The kids were excited to read, but they were able to show their growth and realize the importance of reading and building their reading stamina. Caring for fragile animals also nurtured empathy: children learned to move slowly, use quiet voices, and notice the chicks' needs, connecting their actions to the animals' comfort and safety.
