Once I received the books, I shared with my colleagues in the math department as well as with the inclusion teachers. Two immediately requested different titles. \r\nWith both of those colleagues, I've already had opportunities to discuss and plan how to best create \"thinking classrooms.\" In fact, one of them is a teacher I co-teach with, so we've been able to see the impact firsthand. Through random pairing and small groups of two or three students, we've watched students engage in rich discussions about their thinking. We have seen students who don't normally participate take leadership roles, and students who rarely speak in whole group settings open up within smaller groups.\r\nSeeing this growth in just these two smaller groups motivates me to continue finding titles that apply not only to math but to instruction across the content areas. I hope to start a regular book study and discussion group because when teachers are not isolated in their classrooms but instead learning and sharing with one another--the possibilities are endless!","fullyFundedDate":1757273307638,"projectUrl":"project/making-math-make-sense/9686993/","projectTitle":"Making Math Make Sense","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hicks","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10243382"},{"teacherId":10278157,"projectId":9756900,"letterContent":"On behalf of our students and staff at Pine Ridge Middle School, thank you for your generous purchase of headphones for students with disabilities. Your support has made a meaningful difference in our classrooms, and we are deeply grateful for your commitment to accessible education.\r\n\r\nMany of our donors regularly use technology at home, but may not always see how it supports learning in a school setting. For our students, these headphones are an essential learning tool. They help reduce background noise, allowing students to better focus on instruction, engage with digital learning programs, and access accommodations such as text-to-speech, audiobooks, and instructional videos. This technology enables students to learn at their own pace and in ways that best meet their individual needs.\r\n\r\nWhat excites our students most about the new headphones is the sense of independence they provide. Students feel empowered being able to control their learning environment—adjusting volume, replaying instructions, and staying focused without distractions. Many students have shared how much more confident they feel participating in lessons when they can clearly hear and process information.\r\n\r\nSeveral students, particularly those with sensory sensitivities, attention challenges, or language-based learning differences, have especially benefited from this technology. For these students, the headphones have helped reduce frustration and anxiety, making learning more accessible and enjoyable. Teachers have already noticed improved engagement, increased task completion, and greater confidence in these students.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has directly contributed to creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment. Your support did far more than place books in students' hands—it created an experience that ignited a genuine love for reading, discussion, and critical thinking in my classroom.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, my students were able to dive fully into a novel that challenged them, excited them, and pushed them to think deeply about themes like power, sacrifice, inequality, and choice. From the very first chapters, they were hooked. Students who were often hesitant readers became invested, opinionated, and eager to share their thoughts. Class discussions were lively, thoughtful, and student-driven in a way that every teacher hopes for but doesn't always get to witness.\r\n\r\nAlthough I did not complete my teaching year at this school due to an unexpected move, I am incredibly grateful that we were still able to complete this unit together. In many ways, The Hunger Games became the highlight of our time as a class. The work my students produced during this unit was some of the highest quality I have seen—analytical writing was stronger, textual evidence was used with confidence, and creative responses showed depth and originality. Students weren't just completing assignments; they were invested in the story and proud of their thinking.\r\n\r\nYour donation gave my students access to a shared text that allowed them to feel like part of something bigger. They bonded over characters, debated decisions, made predictions, and supported one another as readers. For many of them, this was the first time a novel truly captured their attention from beginning to end. That kind of impact is lasting, and it extends far beyond a single unit or school year.\r\n\r\nAs a teacher, it is incredibly meaningful to see students fall in love with a book—and that love was made possible because of you. Even now, I think back on that unit with gratitude and pride, knowing that your generosity helped create an unforgettable learning experience for my students.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in teachers, in students, and in the power of books to transform classrooms. Your generosity transformed what could have been a textbook lesson into an unforgettable learning experience. My students were immediately engaged when they fist saw the scratch-off bookmarks. They loved etching their hieroglyphic names and English translations for the bookmark they will use forever. They were excited, curious and eager to ger started. Holding and using hands on resources helped them truly understand that writing systems are not just symbols on a page, but meaningful tools people have used for thousands of years to communicate ideas, culture, and values.\r\nUsing these materials, students explored ancient writing systems such as hieroglyphics and compared them to later forms of written communication, culminating in lessons connected to Chinese traditions like exchanging Hong Bao red envelopes to celebrate the New Year. One of the most powerful moments was watching my students carefully create and interpret symbols, proudly explaining how their Egyptian cartouches represented and how it connected. Some students asked for additional bookmarks so they could make them for their family members and friends. Students who are usually quiet were excited to share, and many asked thoughtful questions that showed deeper understanding. \r\nBecause of your support, my students are now more confident historians who see connections between the past and the present. The next steps include expanding this unit into a cultural comparison project where students will research and write how writing and cultural traditions continue to shape societies today. Thanks to your support, we received the preserved frogs and dissection materials necessary to conduct an authentic anatomy lab, transforming our textbook lesson into an unforgettable hands-on experience. When the materials arrived, the students were immediately filled with extreme excitement; any nervousness quickly turned into focused curiosity as they prepared to become real scientists. We used the resources to dive deep into comparative anatomy, providing a tangible view of body systems that static diagrams simply can't offer. This lab wasn't just a lesson; it was a memory they will never forget.\r\n\r\nYour donation gave my students a vital, hands-on peek into the world of biology. Now that they have successfully explored the major organ systems of the frog, our classroom is moving on to the microscopic level. Our next step is to use compound microscopes to examine the cellular structures and tissue types they encountered during the dissection, such as muscle and epithelial tissue. Following this, they will conduct a comparative analysis, linking the frog's anatomy to human biology to better understand adaptation.
