First, they learned about the problem of stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces, like the roof, covered walkways, and parking lot of our school. The students investigated stormwater runoff problems around the school's campus. They determined a location for installing a rain garden near two downspouts and a concrete pad. \r\n\r\nUsing the Measuring Wheel the students measured and calculated the drainage area, and the slope of the location. Then they were able to determine the area that the rain garden should be. Next, the students used the Drafting Vellum Sheets and the Landscape Templates to develop a plan for the rain garden. The sixth grade students decorated stepping stones they made with the Stepping Stone Mix and Reusable Molds. After digging the trench and the rain garden out, the students laid down 10 meters of Landscape Fabric to reduce weeds under the rocks and stepping stones. The students planted native plants to aid in filtering the stormwater which is now diverted from the downspout into the rain garden. The third grade students will set up the Bird House to replace a dilapidated blue bird nest box to provide shelter for blue birds. Finally, the students were most excited about the Compost Tumbler. The sixth grade students put it together, and it has prompted the greatest curiosity among all of the rain garden preparations. \r\n\r\nAlthough we were not able to obtain professional mentors for this project, I will reach out to the St. Johns Water Management District for future endeavors.","fullyFundedDate":1737466372235,"projectUrl":"project/grants-for-great-ideas-design-a-rain-ga/9055877/","projectTitle":"Grants for Great Ideas: Design a Rain Garden","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lapinski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9893597_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1737032533200","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/cherelle-lapinski"},{"teacherId":7845108,"projectId":5685306,"letterContent":"My students will be entering the junior high school for the first time.
