When they first saw the art supplies, snacks, games, and fidgets, they were absolutely ecstatic. Many could hardly wait to dive in and create.\r\n\r\nThese tools play an essential role in the counseling process. For many students, sitting face-to-face with an adult and discussing their most difficult emotions can feel overwhelming. Having items such as fidgets, Play-Doh, games, and art materials available provides a healthy distraction that helps them feel more at ease and more willing to open up.\r\n\r\nDuring one session, a student was struggling to talk about a challenging situation. She avoided eye contact and responded only with nods. I noticed her quietly moving her pen back and forth on the table as she processed her emotions. I gently slid one of the scratch-art pads toward her, and she immediately began to scratch and create. After a minute or two, she commented on how much she liked the scratch pad—an opening that allowed us to build rapport and helped create a safer, more comfortable space for her to share. She has continued working on that same scratch-art page for several sessions now, immediately engaging with it as soon as she enters the room. As she creates, she has become far more open and expressive about her emotions.\r\n\r\nWitnessing that transformation—sparked by something as simple as an art scratch pad—was truly remarkable. During the activities, students are finding the relative and global maximums and minimums, x-intercepts, and concavity to name a few. Students are able to compare functions as the calculator will graph multiple functions at the same time allowing students to compare function characteristics.\r\n\r\nMany of the students are exploring the calculators on their own and learning new and efficient ways to arrive at conclusions based on the topic.
