These texts have allowed us to introduce and strengthen key reading and math skills at the same time. Students are practicing essential nonfiction literacy skills—such as identifying main ideas, analyzing text features, and interpreting diagrams—while also applying math standards like measuring, analyzing data, working with number patterns, and solving multi-step word problems connected to real-world STEM concepts. Each issue blends science, technology, engineering, and math in a way that helps students see how these skills connect beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become an engaging, interactive experience because of your generosity. Students read the articles in small groups, annotate diagrams, and use the digital resources to explore videos and simulations that support STEM and math learning. Many of our activities now include math standard–aligned tasks, such as graphing results from simple experiments, calculating distances and speeds, or interpreting charts and models shown in the magazine. The online supports have also helped me differentiate instruction, providing read-aloud options, vocabulary tools, and enrichment activities for students ready to extend their learning.\r\n\r\nI've seen remarkable growth in students who previously struggled with either reading or math. One student who used to shy away from word problems is now excitedly breaking down the math challenges included in each issue, using the visuals and data to guide their reasoning. Another student who rarely spoke in discussions now confidently explains how the charts in the magazine connect to the math standards we are working on. Your support has turned reading time into a rich blend of literacy, curiosity, and hands-on math exploration. Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to grow as readers, thinkers, and mathematicians.","fullyFundedDate":1758202871986,"projectUrl":"project/building-future-scientists-one-page-at-a/9545925/","projectTitle":"Building Future Scientists One Page at a Time!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Toussaint","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1001996_orig.png?crop=467,468,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725976440973","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1001996"},{"teacherId":1001996,"projectId":9522537,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our classroom! Because of you, my students now have access to hands-on math resources—including 3-D shapes, a classroom clock, math cubes, magnetic money, magnetic base-ten blocks, long-division supports, and dice—that have completely transformed the way they learn. The very first day these materials arrived, my students' faces lit up with excitement. Several of them immediately asked, \"Can we start using these today?\" and within minutes they were exploring the 3-D shapes and experimenting with the dice to create their own math games.\r\n\r\nThese tools have already brought new life to our lessons. For example, during our geometry unit, students used the 3-D shapes to build and identify real-world structures, proudly explaining the properties of prisms and pyramids. When we practiced long division, the base-ten blocks and math cubes helped students visualize each step, turning something intimidating into something achievable. The magnetic money and classroom clock have been especially helpful for practicing real-world math—students have used them during our \"classroom store\" activity to solve problems involving time, budgeting, and making change.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my students are more engaged, confident, and eager to learn. Our next steps include expanding these interactive activities by incorporating the dice and cubes into small-group math stations and using the magnetic sets for daily problem-solving challenges. Your support has given my students opportunities that simply wouldn't have been possible without you, and we are truly grateful.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making such a meaningful impact on our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1758202907110,"projectUrl":"project/tangible-thinking-building-math-minds/9522537/","projectTitle":"Tangible Thinking: Building Math Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Toussaint","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1001996_orig.png?crop=467,468,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725976440973","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1001996"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_45415","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":391,"numTeachers":40,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":64,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":28,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"9.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":58.3,"schoolId":45415,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Watkins Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Watkins Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/broward-county-public-schools/watkins-elementary-school/45415"}
