This week, a first-grade student came to the station feeling highly anxious and dysregulated. As soon as they sank into the molding comfort of the new Big Joe chair, they grabbed \"A Little Spot Book,\" and their breathing slowed down as the supportive pressure helped them ground themselves. \r\n\r\nHaving these durable, high-quality resources allows our students to safely process their emotions and successfully transition back to learning. These students may have trouble with word reading, may have a limited vocabulary, may have difficulty reading fluently, or struggle to comprehend stories. My goal is to address any of these issues but most importantly I want these students to see themselves as readers and learn to enjoy reading!\r\n My approach to reading is providing direct instruction on areas of need while selecting stories to read across a variety of genres. In doing so I am able to not only develop reading skills but also increase both academic vocabulary and general vocabulary. By giving the students opportunities to select books of interest to them, I can plan instruction based on need. This creates engagement and motivation.\r\n The students were eager to make some book selections last year and those titles are now in class. This project really started last year and will continue this year with a more expansive library thanks to the generosity of donors. We have been able to have discussions about events in stories, make personal connections to stories we have read, and done some compare/contrasting with books and movie versions of the books. The students were so excited when I brought the box full of the donated items to our morning meeting. With all of them sitting in a circle around the box, I showed what we had received 1 thing at a time. \r\nSome of the items will be for rainy or snowy day indoor recess.
