I had to assign students to seats in chairs or on floor cushions to allow for everyone to sit comfortably. They were not fully engaged in their learning because they were so focused on the child next to them sitting too close, or the one on the cushion sliding all around the room.\r\nWhen I shared with the students that we were getting a new carpet with room for all of them to have a spot, they were absolutely thrilled! I showed them pictures and they immediately began buzzing about where they wanted to sit. Having this carpet has transformed our classroom completely. My students were so excited when we first got the materials; even now, months later, they still love using them. \r\n Students enjoy using our \"calm down corner\" when they want to have a few moments to just sit or work alone, when they are experiencing emotions that are affecting their ability to perform academically, or if they are tired or not feeling well. It allows them to regroup, gather their feelings, or rest and refresh so that they are better prepared to rejoin the class and continue learning successfully. It certainly has become a coveted spot in the classroom!\r\n Initially, my plan was to set up a spot on the floor for our calm-down corner. We had been using a desk, and I thought a cozy spot on the floor would be better. So when I received all the materials, I set up a corner with the mat on the floor, the posters hung on the walls around it, and the materials in a basket. The students tried it for a few days, and when we had a discussion about the new calm-down corner, they let me know that they preferred the desk because it was easier to sit there while they did their work, which they like to do with the axolotl perched on the desk next to them. So we returned to the desk, we now use the soft, squishy mat as alternative seating, and they love this just as much as the calm-down corner! Sitting on the floor with the mat has become many students' workplace of choice, especially for those students who struggle to sit still at a desk. It made me start thinking of our next possible Donors Choose project...alternative seating around the classroom!\r\n On behalf of my students and myself, thank you again for your kindness and generosity. The materials you gifted us not only enhance our learning environment but make our classroom a more pleasant and productive place to be.
