I selected this project to address how cell phone use in the classroom has negatively impacted student engagement and learning. School districts and state legislatures across the country are grappling with this issue. I have the authority to set behavioral norms and expectations for my classroom. I have a zero-tolerance policy regarding cellphones and earbuds, and having a locker for such devices in my classroom helps my students live up to our expectations.\r\n\r\nAll of my students this year are in 9th grade. As they are all new to high school, I feel it is important that they become accustomed to turning off and locking up their phones immediately upon entering the classroom. Students are engaged and are learning that they can be away from their phones for an entire class period.
