Our scholars work hard on their capstone project, this includes defending their work twice throughout the year, once at the mid year point in December and one last time at the end of the year in June. Scholars must take their work and deliver a presentation that lasts no longer than thirty minutes. During this presentation they must accurately reflect on the work they have committed to, the data they have collected, the relevant research available and the process for addressing the problem. While scholars are often in their environment working on these many scholastic tasks they are equally unsure of themselves as they stand before a panel of adults trying to defend their work. Confronted with this level of unease and anxiety students tend to fall pry to their own devices and wilt under the pressure.\r\n\r\nWith the support of donors like you I have provided scholars with the opportunity to practice, rehearse and revise their presentations. Scholars deliver their presentations and record themselves, as they often do for social media, but this time in an extended format and with an academic purpose. I then download the videos and share them with the students so they can critique themselves and continue to make revisions and adjustments. Students have reported back that they are grateful for the opportunity to see themselves as others would see them. They have shared their videos with family members and friends in order to get even more feedback. It has grown to a point where students are already asking for opportunities to record themselves as they are planning for a successful final presentation. It has indeed been a game changer in terms of confidence, lessening anxiety and providing a supportive environment for self-improvement. \r\n\r\nStudents are extremely comfortable using video as a communication and entertainment medium. Playing off of this ease, using a GoPro to record themselves is a smooth transition to utilizing the skills they have already been developing. It is alost a given students who use videos in social media consistently re-shoot, re-take, and revise their attempts. Now, provided with a simple to use camera, they are applying the same skills to their educational development. There has been no convincing or coaxing of students to use the camera as one might expect. Instead the expectation has been set and the understanding evident that it is merely a tool for self-improvement. To that point it has bee such a benefit. Now the adult issue is how to handle the many requests to use the camera throughout the year as they all want time to rehearse and prepare!\r\n\r\nOnce again thank you for your foresight and joining me as we work to develop practical and useful ways to advance the learning of our students. Being nervous, scared, or reluctant to stand in front of others can be overcome through practice, practice and more practice. Using the camera provides just such an outlet for that practice.","fullyFundedDate":1733274636671,"projectUrl":"project/building-confidence-through-video-analys/8630948/","projectTitle":"Building Confidence Through Video Analysis","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Vitelli","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9176748_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y285&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692184460069","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9176748"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_128166","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":62,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":31,"percentWhite":22,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":38,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":61.1,"schoolId":128166,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Capital Preparatory Harbor - Upper School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Capital Preparatory Harbor - Upper School ","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/connecticut/connecticut-department-of-education/capital-preparatory-harbor-upper-school/128166"}
