Watching the fish swim calmly through the water provides a natural source of relaxation and self-regulation for students who may feel overwhelmed or dysregulated throughout the day. The gentle movement of the fish, the bubbling of the filter, and the peaceful presence of the tank have created a soothing focal point in our room, helping students practice mindfulness and self-soothing strategies when emotions run high. This calming effect has been especially beneficial for students who struggle with anxiety, frustration, or emotional regulation, giving them a peaceful retreat within our shared space. The aquarium's impact has extended beyond just our classroom—students from other rooms regularly stop by to visit the fish, taking a few moments to observe, relax, and reset before returning to their own learning environments.\r\n\r\nBeyond its calming influence, the aquarium has also served as a valuable tool for fostering responsibility and empathy. Students take turns assisting with feeding the fish and observing their behaviors, learning about the needs of living creatures and the importance of consistent care. This hands-on experience has helped reinforce lessons about responsibility, patience, and the impact of our actions on others—skills that directly translate into their relationships with peers and adults. By caring for the fish, students are developing a sense of ownership and pride in their classroom, strengthening their connection to our community and each other.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, the aquarium has provided a natural conversation starter and source of engagement for students who may struggle with social interactions. Observing the fish together and discussing their behaviors has encouraged students to connect with one another, share their thoughts, and practice positive social skills in a low-pressure environment. This shared interest has created new opportunities for friendships to form, particularly for students who may have difficulty initiating conversations or finding common ground with their peers. Thanks to the generosity of Donors Choose, this simple addition to our classroom has enriched our learning environment in ways that extend far beyond academics, fostering emotional growth, empathy, and stronger connections among students.","fullyFundedDate":1736193258514,"projectUrl":"project/the-calming-current-exploring-emotional/8980995/","projectTitle":"The Calming Current: Exploring Emotional Regulation With Aquariums","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Joe","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9249062"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_42783","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":324,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":36,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":67,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":88.9,"schoolId":42783,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Centennial Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Centennial Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/thompson-school-dist-r2-j/centennial-elementary-school/42783"}
