Walking down the hallways to my classroom holding a box with my name on it, filled with books my students had requested, was exhilarating. Even more exhilarating was introducing the books to my students as a morning meeting topic, where all are seated on the carpet, ready for the day to begin. I would read off the titles of each book, sometimes reading the synopses on the back or previewing the subject matter, and then show the students where to look in the classroom in order to open the books themselves. \r\n\r\nThe best part of these meetings was watching as different students' faces lit up depending on the topic of a given book. As the old teacher adage goes, \"Some books are a mirror of the self and others are a window into a new world.\" One of my students in particular is a striving reader (not yet at grade level in reading) and every day I read a few pages from the I Survived book: \"I Survived the Attack of the Grizzlies, 1967\" with him and it's made him more engaged in reading as well as in class in general.\r\n\r\nWe have also just begun our Social Studies and Science unit on how landforms and bodies of water are formed and the fast and slow changes that occur on Earth that can create these forms. Students will learn about cause and effect and research volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Many of the National Geographic Kids, I Survived, and other science-themed books will act as non-digital resources that students can use to learn more about their topic and contextualize these various natural disasters into the real world. These books have changed the atmosphere and learning environment of my classroom for the better and I hope to continue growing my library for my students' benefit and excitement!","fullyFundedDate":1733257726363,"projectUrl":"project/mission-fall-in-love-with-reading-non/8983767/","projectTitle":"Mission: Fall in Love with Reading! The bilingual books and interactive language tools have transformed our classroom, making reading an exciting and enriching experience for all.\r\nHow These Resources Are Shaping Our Learning\r\nReading in our classroom is an interactive and immersive experience. With access to dual-language books, students can engage with texts that reinforce their Spanish while strengthening their English literacy. These books have provided valuable opportunities for students to make connections between the two languages, develop comprehension strategies, and build vocabulary in meaningful ways.\r\nBeyond books, the whiteboards for math and digital tools have given students additional support in developing their language skills. They now feel more confident when tackling new words, expressing their thoughts in writing, and engaging in discussions in both languages.","fullyFundedDate":1735660991527,"projectUrl":"project/-if-it-doesnt-challenge-you-it-doesn/8987133/","projectTitle":"\" If It Doesn't Challenge You, It Doesn't Change You\"","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Calvo Arce","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9858835_orig.jpg?crop=733,733,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733294096160","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9858835"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_43338","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":339,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":53,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":40,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":54,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":75.9,"schoolId":43338,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Silverthorne Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Silverthorne Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/summit-school-dist-re-1/silverthorne-elementary-school/43338"}
