They are foundational elements in helping students manage their unique sensory and focus needs, which in turn maximizes their engagement and learning.\r\n\r\nOne of the most impactful changes has been the creation of our new \"Calm Corner,\" centered around the new cross-legged chair. During our independent reading and writing block, a student who typically struggles to sit still and often fidgets disruptively chose the cross-legged chair. Because the chair provides a specific way to sit that satisfies their sensory need for pressure and movement, they were able to settle in with their book. In the Calm Corner, there is also some of the calming posters for emotional regulation that helps the students use the visuals to help calm their bodies.\r\nInstead of needing constant redirection, this student remained focused for the entire 30-minute block—a significant personal achievement! The fidgets (like the fidget block and silent putty) are used discreetly at desks or at the reading table by several students throughout the day to help them regulate during lessons that require long periods of listening.\r\n\r\nThe new books, especially the one that talks about a character using noise-canceling headphones due to sensitivity, have been vital. We read the book aloud as a class, and it sparked an open, honest discussion. Students who use accommodations like noise-reducing headphones or preferred seating felt validated. One student, who often feels self-conscious about their noise sensitivity, quietly said, \"They are like me.\" This moment helped the whole class understand that these differences are just different ways people learn and interact with the world, making our classroom feel even safer and more understanding.\r\n\r\nThe initial reaction was one of genuine excitement!\r\nWhen the students first saw the flexible seating options, there was an immediate buzz. The cross-legged chair was the most sought-after item—they were fascinated by a chair designed for a non-traditional sitting position, which many of them prefer naturally. It signaled to them that this classroom was designed for them and how they naturally function.\r\n\r\nThe fidgets were introduced in small groups with clear guidelines. The students were incredibly respectful and appreciative, recognizing them not as toys, but as helpful tools. They understood that these were items to help them stay calm and focused. The overwhelming response was a quiet, positive curiosity, followed by focused use—a testament to how much they needed these self-regulation supports.\r\n\r\nYour donation is not just furniture and books; it is the gift of focus, validation, and inclusion. I grew up loving Kurt Vonnegut, but was always hesitant to teach it in my own classroom because his philosophical commentary on the modern world is often lost or misunderstood. This year I started teaching a college english class to high school seniors and I decided to test the waters with Vonnegut. They loved him so much that they begged me to read another one of his works, which was only made possible because of you. When I feel angry that teachers need to raise their own money for school supplies I immediately think of people like you and your generosity. \r\n\r\nThe AP Bio and Sociology teachers at my school told me they heard my kids discussing our books in their classrooms too, which we all know is a sign of a book changing their lives and their ways of thinking about life. This is something I've dreamed of for a long time, and your kindness has made it possible.\r\n\r\nLearning a new language like Chinese can feel daunting at times, but having engaging, authentic books to explore makes such a difference. Moments like that remind me why I love teaching so much.\r\n\r\nThese books aren't just tools for learning— They're helping my students connect with the language in a way that goes beyond the classroom.
