I grew up loving Kurt Vonnegut, but was always hesitant to teach it in my own classroom because his philosophical commentary on the modern world is often lost or misunderstood. This year I started teaching a college english class to high school seniors and I decided to test the waters with Vonnegut. They loved him so much that they begged me to read another one of his works, which was only made possible because of you. When I feel angry that teachers need to raise their own money for school supplies I immediately think of people like you and your generosity. \r\n\r\nThe AP Bio and Sociology teachers at my school told me they heard my kids discussing our books in their classrooms too, which we all know is a sign of a book changing their lives and their ways of thinking about life. Mental health needs to be a top priority in our society.\r\nWhen you provided a donation to this project you provided access to the tools that encourage positive coping skills, self esteem, mindfulness, and recentering. The variety of resources included in this project included ones that many students have come to find helpful for them handle the stress of living in the world today. For some of us, we have always known what can provide us a sense of calm; for other of us, we have needed explicit direction and suggestions of activities to try. We were able to all read a book together for the first time in years; we often don't have or can't afford enough copies to do that so we have to read books in small groups. Because we were able to all read together it created a new love of reading, so much so that my kids have now fallen in love with a new author and are begging me to read more of his books. Many of them told me they haven't loved reading their entire lives and now as seniors, they feel more prepared to head to college next year. \r\n\r\nYou will probably see another fundraiser from me in the near future, trying to secure more books for them for next semester, and we are always so grateful for your support! This is something I've dreamed of for a long time, and your kindness has made it possible.\r\n\r\nLearning a new language like Chinese can feel daunting at times, but having engaging, authentic books to explore makes such a difference. When my students saw the books for the first time, their excitement was palpable. They immediately began flipping through the pages, pointing out characters they recognized, and asking questions about stories they were eager to dive into. Moments like that remind me why I love teaching so much.\r\n\r\nThese books aren't just tools for learning— They're helping my students connect with the language in a way that goes beyond the classroom. For some, it's boosting their confidence in their reading skills. For others, it's inspiring curiosity and creativity.\r\n\r\nYour support means so much to me and to my students. It's not just about the books themselves but about the opportunities they bring—the chance for my students to grow, to dream bigger, and to discover the joy of learning.
