The pellets enabled us to provide a hands on science experience for our young learners. \r\n By dissecting the pellets, students saw first hand how a food chain works. These young scientists were fully engaged in finding the bones of animals encased in the pellets. They had engaging and thoughtful discussions trying to decipher which animals the owls might have eaten. They then participated in group conversations where they shared their findings and identified the animals, from the producers to the predators, within the food chain.\r\n After completing the dissection activity, students then wrote about their findings. Their bone collections and writing were displayed in the hallway for others to read and comment on. We received such positive feedback from parents, other students, and teachers. We are trying to support children who may arrive at school trying to process trauma, neglect, hunger, homelessness, and other factors inhabiting their ability to learn.
