Students deeply valued each experience we had to explore the natural world and to ground ourselves in a different rhythm. Each excursion students requested additional time to explore or simply sit in silence. They expressed they felt more calm and at peace taking moments away from our school building. \r\n\r\nTo begin our English Development and Nature Journaling Unit, students engaged in the project, \"Where My Story Began\" and \"Where I am Now.\" In this project, they illustrated and described the patterns, shapes and colors of their home country as well as those in their new home, Gunnison, Colorado. Watching students reflect on different places, elements, memories or traditions was energizing. A sense of pride beamed from each individual, allowing them to feel empowered and connected to their identity. Watching students explore and study their new home ignited joy. Students were full of wonder and curiosity. It brought out a child-like sense in everyone. \r\n\r\nBeyond this project, students worked on developing vocabulary related to their senses. They participate in a \"sit spot\" experience by sitting quietly and alone in one location for an extended period, capturing the scene through words and pictures. At the end, students practiced their oral language by sharing their unique experience with the group. The time in silence resonated with students, helping them regulate their thoughts and emotions, but also connecting them with a sense of place and purpose. \r\n\r\nEach exploration connected to nature and language left students eager for more. Just before our holiday break, I asked students what type of learning activities they wanted to engage more with during our second semester together. With unanimous agreement, students all requested we incorporate more opportunities to do art and work outside.\r\n\r\nWhat you all have provided is a spark to continue to rethink how students can learn. To continue to inspire students, while allowing them to move forward academically, we must expand beyond the traditional classroom and design experiences that invigorate a love of learning and fortify our connection with one another and the world. You all made this possible. As we move forward with our year, we are eager to continue using the materials your donation provided to creatively incorporate art into opportunities to learn English.","fullyFundedDate":1754406614131,"projectUrl":"project/newcomer-english-nature-journaling-class/9481069/","projectTitle":"Newcomer English Nature Journaling Class","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Cammack","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10085389_orig.jpg?crop=911,911,x568,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753396026953","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10085389"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_41867","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":410,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":42,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":65,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":30,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":70.8,"schoolId":41867,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Gunnison High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Gunnison High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/gunnison-watershed-sd-re-1j/gunnison-high-school/41867"}
