My 30 first-grade bilingual students have been using the new math manipulatives every day to explore addition and subtraction within 10. One favorite activity was when students worked in pairs to build addition problems using the colorful counters and number rods. They loved physically moving the pieces to see how numbers combine and break apart, which helped make abstract concepts much more concrete and understandable.\r\n\r\nWhen the manipulatives first arrived, the excitement was contagious! Students were eager to explore each new tool, exclaiming over the bright colors and shapes. Many immediately started creating their own number problems, and it was amazing to see their curiosity and engagement soar.\r\n\r\nNext week, we will begin working on addition and subtraction within 20, and the manipulatives will play a key role in helping students visualize larger numbers and understand place value. These tools will allow my students to continue building strong foundational math skills through hands-on learning, while also fostering confidence and independence in solving problems.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity! I have 30 students who are learning both Spanish and English, and these resources have already made a huge difference in their learning.\r\n\r\nThe headphones are especially helpful because we use technology every day in our classroom. My students work on literacy and math programs that adapt to their learning levels, and the headphones allow them to focus without distractions. Instead of hearing 30 different voices from computers at once, they can now concentrate on their own lessons. This has helped them build confidence and independence as learners.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for my students is that they now feel like \"real learners\" when they put on their headphones. Many of them even call it their \"special thinking time.\" The baggies have also brought them joy because each student has their own set of materials neatly organized. They love having a sense of ownership over their supplies and being responsible for keeping everything safe.\r\n\r\nSome of my bilingual students, who are still building their reading confidence, have especially warmed up to this new technology. One student who was often shy about reading out loud now feels comfortable practicing quietly with her program through the headphones. Another student who struggled to stay focused can now work for much longer stretches of time because the headphones block out noise. These may seem like small changes, but for my first graders, they are huge steps toward becoming stronger readers and writers in both Spanish and English.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this possible. My first graders aren't quite ready for traditional lined paper, and this resource has made such a difference. We've already used it for about four big projects, and I can see their confidence growing every day.\r\n\r\nTheir writing is more legible, and they no longer feel stressed about trying to fit letters into tiny lines. They are learning how to write tall letters that reach the top, understand what it means when letters \"hang down,\" and are even improving their finger spaces. Now, they are much more aware of how they are building sentences and expressing their ideas.\r\n\r\nAt first, my students were nervous when they saw the paper, because they knew it meant writing. But now, they get excited about it—especially because they know they can also create a drawing to match their writing. Each project brings them one step closer to becoming confident bilingual writers!\r\n\r\nIn the next few weeks, we'll be using the paper to write about manatees and sharks, and my students are so excited to dive into learning about these amazing ocean animals.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping my young writers find joy in writing and grow their skills in such an important way.","fullyFundedDate":1753323335250,"projectUrl":"project/bilingual-writers-in-the-making-just-ad/9435229/","projectTitle":"Bilingual Writers in the Making: Just Add Paper!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Batres","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9230802_orig.jpg?crop=640,640,x0,y81&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1731560977750","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-batres"},{"teacherId":9633548,"projectId":8577961,"letterContent":"I am incredibly grateful for your generosity in funding my project, \"Bilingual, Bicultural, Biliterate—Kinder Babies Thrive!\" Because of your support, my students have been engaged in meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that are helping them grow in both English and Spanish. \r\n\r\nThe sand trays have been an absolute favorite! The voice recording buttons have allowed my students to practice their language skills in a creative and independent way, while the small whiteboards and Spanish games have made learning both effective and exciting. \r\n\r\nOne of the things that has made me the most grateful has been seeing my students' enthusiasm when using the materials you provided.
