Spring has sprouted in Durango, CO, and we have begun reading Seedfolks! It has been so fun to see how quickly students are investing in the characters and making connections to their own lives. \"We do the same for Dia de Muertos!\" \"My grandmother is like Ana, always spying and suspecting the worst!\" \"I have an altar in my house, too!\" After several months of discussing the concept of \"heritage\" and celebrating individual stories, this book is the perfect culminating text.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the connections students are already making with the characters and their own lives, they are showing HOW MUCH LANGUAGE they have acquired over the year. Students that have never read a full chapter book in English before are showing remarkable confidence and competence in their comprehension of the main characters and events of the book. The book offers the perfect balance of accessibility and challenge!\r\n\r\nFinally, with the end of the year approaching and spring fever in the air, this book is giving students something to anchor them to their learning. As a bonus, we will be planting seeds along with our characters and hoping to transform our little classroom into a colorful garden of growing plants, growing readers, and diverse individuals that bring their offer unique experiences and perspectives.\r\n\r\nThank you so much, again, for your generosity and supporting multilingual and multicultural students in our community.","fullyFundedDate":1734380538704,"projectUrl":"project/stories-that-speak-inspiring-literacy-a/8980479/","projectTitle":"Stories That Speak: Inspiring Literacy and Language Development","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McKenzie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9851447"},{"teacherId":4968675,"projectId":8573693,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donation to my Donor's Choose project \"Materials for a Thinking Classroom\". Because of your generosity, I have been able to supply students with needed materials to engage in English Language Arts.\r\n\r\nWith the funds, I purchased everyday classroom items such as pencils, notebooks, glue, sticky notes, and markers. The students have been grateful to have these materials so that they have what they need to engage in the work of Reading, Writing, and Communicating every day.\r\n\r\nI also purchased tubs for which to hold these classroom materials. The tubs are an extremely helpful tool to organize everything that students might need to show me their thinking.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, one of my favorite purchases were book display stands. This is a way for me to show students a variety of texts that they can engage with.\r\n\r\nOverall, I am so appreciative of your donation so that my students are well-prepared to engage in critical thinking activities.","fullyFundedDate":1727462597461,"projectUrl":"project/materials-for-a-thinking-classroom/8573693/","projectTitle":"Materials for a Thinking Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Trousdale","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4968675"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_42413","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":461,"numTeachers":34,"percentFrplEligible":46,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":62,"percentIndigenous":6,"percentLatinx":24,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":68.2,"schoolId":42413,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Escalante Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Escalante Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/durango-school-district-9-r/escalante-middle-school/42413"}
