We have over 700 students at our middle school, so keeping the store stocked is no small feat! This helps teachers so they can give points for good behavior and not have to worry about providing their own prizes from their own money. I wanted to do something to help take things off the plates of our educators, and this was a big time consuming project for me when I was in the classroom.\r\n\r\nAs an administrator, I want to ensure we are supporting our teachers, but also rewarding students when they are behaving as outstanding citizens in our school community. I strongly believe that all people, whether students or adults, do better when they are positively encouraged. PBIS (positive behavior intervention systems) works really well to shift the culture of a school to encourage students to make good choices and reinforce that intrinsic need to do good. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for making this happen. It brings joy and happiness to so many students at our school every Friday and I hope that it is also shaping them to become the best students they can be!","fullyFundedDate":1776535629709,"projectUrl":"project/stock-the-pbis-store-through-the-end-of/10197383/","projectTitle":"Stock the PBIS Store Through the End of the Year!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Boyer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7269635_orig.jpg?crop=956,956,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723078031314","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/christina-boyer"},{"teacherId":10379399,"projectId":9952157,"letterContent":"The implementation of these shelf backstops has turned our library from a place of \"hide and seek\" into a professional-grade learning hub. We are using the resources to ensure that every single spine in our collection is flush with the edge of the shelf, making browsing effortless.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the newly organized shelves, the reaction was classic middle school: a mix of surprised observation and immediate use. One 7th grader stopped mid-aisle, looked at a perfectly aligned row of graphic novels, and said, \"Wait, I didn't even know we had this many volumes of Dragonball Z! I could never find them back there.\" That simple \"aha!\" moment is exactly what this project was about—making the \"invisible\" visible again.\r\n\r\nWith our collection now fully visible and accessible, we are moving into a \"Library Exploration\" project. Students are being tasked with finding a \"Hidden Gem\"—a book they've never noticed before that was likely hidden in the back of a shelf. They will be writing brief reviews and creating \"Shelf Talkers\" to recommend these newly-rediscovered treasures to their peers. Our students and teachers now have a comfy, inviting space in which to relax and engage in conversation. When people enter the classroom, they always comment on how comfortable and calm our little conversation pit is. The plants help to enliven the otherwise windowless space, and the muted colors help to tone down the royal blue of the walls.\r\n\r\nThis space is used with students who need extra academic support, and the homey furniture communicates that this is a supportive space and helps students to let go of academic anxieties. Teachers have appreciated being able to get off their feet and into a soft chair during one-on-one instructional coaching sessions.\r\n\r\nIn order to let the space shine even more, my next step is to paint over the royal blue walls and add a decorative background to the cork boards.
