I'm a Speech-Language Pathologist at an elementary school in Colorado. As everywhere, we are strapped for extra resources to purchase items that help to complement our practice. Often, I find myself using my own money to buy items that help to keep my students engaged and my practice fresh.\r\n\r\nYou have provided me with two items. One is a simple story system that helps students work on story retell (including the narrative arc) and vocabulary building. This sytem is terrific because there's lots of stories to work with and they follow the progress of the year (e.g., summer, spring, fall). Within each \"season\" there are multiple stories to teach and learn. My students love the song we sing at the beginning. They love the predictable, familiar illustrations, and they seem to love retelling the stories. Most importantly, I can see them learning about the rise and fall of stories and about new vocabulary. The second item you provided me is a game called Blurt. My students *love* playing this game. During the game, students are given a clue and then they blurt out the answer. It's a game that works on rapid naming and vocabulary building. It's particularly helpful for my older students.\r\n\r\nAgain, thank you so much for these wonderful resources. They have enriched my practice and helped me to stay excited about my work!","fullyFundedDate":1756158199237,"projectUrl":"project/learners-need-language/9605225/","projectTitle":"Learners Need Language!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McNeil","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3851800_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1473106081026","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3851800"},{"teacherId":8426306,"projectId":8933503,"letterContent":"I cannot thank you enough for your donation to Our Kindergarten Book Nook Resources for our Families - Por Favor Project. You are amazing. \r\n\r\nMy kindergarten colleague, Mrs. Peterson, and I started The Book Nook this year and it has been such a joy to see so many kindergarten families utilizing it. The goal of the Book Nook has been to bring families together, ignite a love for reading, and take kids on fun adventures through books. Each day kids bring in their book bags eager for new books, new adventures, new stories to share with their families.\r\n\r\nMrs. Peterson and I wanted this experience for ALL of our students. We both have families in our classrooms who are native Spanish-speakers. We wanted for them to have the option for the beauty of the Book Nook in Spanish. After talking to one of my Spanish speaking dads, this year, he told me that he would love to be able to read a book in Spanish to his child before bed.\r\n\r\nWhen I was in my early twenties I lived and taught in a Bosnian Refugee Camp in Croatia and then worked for a nonprofit, in Albania. I studied hrvatski (Croatian) and gjuha shiqipe (Albanian).... My everyday life was void of English. But, at night, when I curled up with a book, it was in English. I want our native Spanish speaking families to have books in Spanish to snuggle up with at the end of the day.\r\n\r\nOne time I was talking to a woman in the refugee camp and didn't have the words for what I was trying to say - so I simply said it in English. She didn't understand what I was saying, but she responded by telling me my voice was so pretty when I spoke in English. It was simply because I could string my thoughts together fluidly in my native language. I want our Spanish speaking families to have access to books in their native language where they can focus on the thought, the story, not the language, just for this magical moment.\r\n\r\nYou are giving our families the greatest gift - books, adventures, family time - and valuing their native language. The math materials have helped my students master their multiplication and division facts, visualize the relationships between addition and subtraction and multiplication and division and will help them learn about wholes and parts in our upcoming fraction unit. The hands-on and graphic set-up of the materials are engaging and have helped them develop a deeper number sense and create mental models for math.\r\nOur students could not wait to work with these new materials! When I asked them what they liked most about them and if they helped them learn, a lot of hands went up in the air! They all agreed that the materials helped them learn and were challenging but fun. The multiplication and division wrap-ups helped them practice skip counting in the context of multiplication. They love that the wrap-ups are like a puzzle and that they can check their answers to see how well they are learning their math facts. The number bond boards help them see relationships between numbers and operations as well as learn their fact families. We will be using the fraction circles next month when we start our unit on fractions, but just like the other materials you donated have done, I know they will help them visualize math concepts through concrete materials.\r\nThank you again for your generous donation and helping our students develop a deeper number sense!","fullyFundedDate":1729522764205,"projectUrl":"project/magnificent-math-materials/8579038/","projectTitle":"Magnificent Math Materials!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Arias","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5595191"},{"teacherId":9633735,"projectId":8578616,"letterContent":"My students were so excited when I first unveiled the wrap-ups, which were the first of our materials to arrive. They were so excited about practicing their multiplication facts that many of them asked if they could use them during free time. Not only were they more motivated to practice, but many students that struggled to focus with traditional paper and pencil practice were able to stay focused and practice their facts. Scores on our bi-weekly facts test increased with the implementation of the multiplication wrap ups. We haven't used the division ones yet, but I know that they will be just as impactful.\r\n\r\nI used the timelines during our addition and subtraction unit. It was very helpful for students to be able to visualize numbers for rounding and for adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. Once I introduced the resource, students would grab them on their own to assist them in their independent math work.\r\n\r\nThe whiteboards were also a big hit during the multiplication and subtraction unit. Students used them to create math mountains to help visualize the relationship between addition and subtraction. They were so helpful that our math interventionist grabbed a stack of them to help with math small groups.\r\n\r\nWe haven't used the fraction circles yet, but I know they will be very helpful during our fractions unit. Students need to be able to represent math concepts concretely and with picture support before they can grasp them abstractly, and all of these resources do exactly that. They also increase math engagement.
