My second grade students are always very excited when we get to use our place value discs. They are eager to see how the math we do on paper using digits relates to what can be physically displayed using manipulatives. \r\n\r\nSecond grade is when addition and subtraction with regrouping is first introduced to students, and it can be a tricky concept to grasp when only using pencil and paper. My students get regular practice trading in tens and hundreds represented by place value discs for 10 ones or 10 tens. We use these manipulatives sided by side with writing the standard algorithm so that students can see mat come alive. \r\n\r\nI plan to loop with my second grade students next year, so the next steps of this project will continue on to third grade with them. In third grade students will be introduced to \"groups of\" when learning to divide and multiply. I have no doubt that using physical manipulatives will have a great impact on my students' learning.","fullyFundedDate":1727463008343,"projectUrl":"project/place-value-manipulatives/8573490/","projectTitle":"Place Value Manipulatives","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ulrich","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9632138"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_49118","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":400,"numTeachers":27,"percentFrplEligible":18,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":69,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":49118,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Foothills Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Foothills Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/academy-school-district-20/foothills-elementary-school/49118"}
