Over the past week, students have worked to research multiple topics, played fun games, and engaged in many deep conversations about their own perspectives on debate topics. We explored historical topics, such as the atomic bombs dropped on Japan during World War II and ethical questions concerning Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts. Students also were able to engage in our community by talking with local public defenders and a local politician about the use of debate in their respective fields. They also conducted a semi-formal debate on the effectiveness of our nation's prison system. \r\n\r\nIt has been a true treasure to see this community come together to support our students. The work and effort that went into this debate workshop will have a lasting impact on not only the students who attended the workshop, but the school community as a whole. The materials brought to the school with this project are already being utilized in other Social Studies classrooms. Thank you for your dedication to student learning.","fullyFundedDate":1733272512403,"projectUrl":"project/teen-debate-project/8936585/","projectTitle":"Teen Debate Project","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Misty","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9494193"},{"teacherId":9662870,"projectId":8655024,"letterContent":"As a School Counselor, I have the great privilege to teach wellness strategies and SEL activities to them through weekly rotations of small group sessions. This allows me to teach the same topic to all of our students (about 140 students), switching topics every 2 weeks. I like to use a variety of creative activities as a way to bring new appreciation and hands-on experience to these topics. One of the students' favorites is a guided art activity. \r\n\r\nBefore receiving your funding, I had to improvise with supplies and work spaces. Tables did not always have smooth surfaces for working on, art supplies were not always of good quality or were incomplete. There were not enough supplies to go around (even with sharing) and much time was spent dealing with those issues rather than getting to create art. We rolled with it, but I craved a better experience for my students.\r\n\r\nNow that I have received funding, I have purchased supplies and portable work surfaces. I have been able to use the 45 minute classes to fully immerse my students in therapeutic art experiences without interruption or frustration due to these former limitations. I can't even tell you what a difference having proper work surfaces, quality art supplies, and enough art supplies make. \r\n\r\nThe first time my students got to use the new supplies, they were blown away because they simply felt special. I set up the work space ahead of time so that each student had a dedicated space with the materials they needed right next to them. As they walked in, the beauty of the environment created a deeper desire to learn. They not only sensed the extra care that I took, but they really appreciated the quality (and quantity) of the art supplies as well and noticed that they were easier to work with. \r\n\r\nI start each group art session with a quote and guide them through a drawing or painting. They quietly create for a solid half hour or so and then I end the session with a reflection activity before cleaning up. I usually ask them to share how they felt before they started and how they feel now. The responses are remarkable in how 30 minutes of art can change one's emotions and attitudes about the day. These experiences serve as a lifelong touchstone for students to remember that tapping into healthy, creative activities can promote well-being. \r\n\r\nAs for next steps, I will continue to offer artistic experience during my wellness rotations throughout the year and use these supplies. Additionally, many of our students work with me on a 1:1 basis. Because they know that I use creative methods to promote mental health and that I now have really nice art supplies in my office, they have started to ask to use the art supplies during individual sessions. They create original expressions of their inner lives which seem to deepen their ability to reflect and heal.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, my students get to experience the joy and healing powers of making art. Thank you again for providing the funding to enhance my Wellness and SEL classes with our students. It is a joy to teach in creative ways, and a joy to have quality materials to allow students to find their personal expression with ease.","fullyFundedDate":1730556888529,"projectUrl":"project/creativity-in-school-counseling-and-sel/8655024/","projectTitle":"Creativity in School Counseling and SEL","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lindbloom","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9662870"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61842","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":140,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":28,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":52,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":45,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"5 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":67.7,"schoolId":61842,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Yampah Mountain School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Yampah Mountain School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/-county-run-/yampah-mountain-school/61842"}
