From the moment they first saw the books, they were excited to read! This is no easy task, as many of our students struggle with reading at grade level and are often intimidated by the number of pages in a traditional book. These graphic novels are the key to helping students feel successful from the very first page. Thanks to your very generous contribution, students will have a visual experience to support their comprehension, build confidence, and develop a genuine love for reading.\r\n\r\nThese new texts also allow us to explicitly teach critical literacy skills in an engaging and accessible way. Students practice making inferences by analyzing facial expressions and visual cues, strengthening comprehension beyond just decoding words. We focus on sequencing, identifying theme, character development, and understanding dialogue within context. Graphic novels also support vocabulary development and language acquisition for our English learners by pairing text with meaningful imagery. In our classroom, reading is interactive and student-centered students discuss what they notice, make predictions, and connect the story to their own experiences. You might see students reading independently, working in pairs to analyze a page, or participating in group discussions where every student feels confident contributing. Because of your support, reading in our classroom is no longer intimidating it's engaging, collaborative, and empowering.","fullyFundedDate":1762367667340,"projectUrl":"project/more-than-words-for-visual-learners/9739687/","projectTitle":"More than Words for Visual Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Razo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6469152_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1690403079903","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6469152"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_85505","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":593,"numTeachers":30,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":10,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":81,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"19.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.0,"schoolId":85505,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Edgewood Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Edgewood Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/west-covina-unified-school-district/edgewood-middle-school/85505"}
