It can be hard to get students interested in fiction, as they are more used to reading short, nonfiction articles.\r\n\r\nHowever, they are excited about these books. \"Are we reading today?\" is a common refrain now, one that I did not think I would get tired of hearing! I tell them \"Before we read, we are going to do our vocabulary,\" and they groan. \"Can I read? Can we popcorn read? I'll just read ahead,\" is what they tell me.\r\n\r\nWe are starting the semester with Booked by Kwame Alexander. It will be the first book some of them have read from cover to cover. Each page is a short poem they confidently read, even for those who have learned English as a second language only within the last couple years, even for those who declare they hate reading and would normally resist doing so. They happily practice advanced reading analysis skills for the short text.\r\n\r\nIn a couple months we will begin the next unit, When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller, another book they are curious about.\r\n\r\nWe appreciate you and your generosity. Making it very rare for them to lose assignments.\r\n\r\nThey were so excited when I started passing out the new binders. A lot of the old binders had been raggedy and torn up.
