Having a diverse selection of books have allowed me to link cultural backgrounds to our current English Language Arts curriculum. We began reading Ibtihaj Muhammad's children's book, \"The Proudest Blue.\" Before reading this book, we discussed different aspects about the Muslim community. W expressed the importance of wearing Hijab for both women and men in the Muslim community. The students had the floor to ask questions or share their experiences with wearing Hijab, whether they were apart of this community, have seen members wearing Hijab and more! As I read the story, I stopped to ask questions regarding the little girl's meaning of expression and emotions, creating an opportunity for the student's to relate. After reading, we then created a craft of a woman wearing Hijab. The students were very serious when drawing a woman's face, as they wanted to respect the Muslim culture. \r\n\r\nCreating experiences like this one, creates more curious readers! There are several books within our classroom that typically relate to school or current student trends. However, having cultural books allows the students to migrate towards the exploration of other cultures. Our class schedule allows for multiple opportunities of silent reading and taking comprehension assessments that correlate to the book they read. Third graders often love sharing with their classmates which book they read and how it can relate to either their culture or their friend's culture! Many students were seen sharing books funded from this project; \"Ohana Means Family,\" \"Hidden Figures,\" \"Eyes that Kiss in the Cornes,\" and even rereading, \"The Proudest Blue!\"\r\n\r\nFinally, students are becoming intrigued to research other cultures or ask for more books similar to the books we have in our new collection. I have even coordinated with the third grade team to exchange specific books, creating further educational opportunities! We have even created a list in our calendars for when each book correlates during a specific time in the year per holidays and celebrations. I would like to thank you again for giving our classroom, our school, the chance to grow and expanding our reading selection within the classroom!","fullyFundedDate":1750256238970,"projectUrl":"project/this-is-me/9379572/","projectTitle":"This Is Me!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Robins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8524441_orig.jpg?crop=1170,1170,x0,y401&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1748225546205","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8524441"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_5060","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":454,"numTeachers":22,"percentFrplEligible":37,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":12,"percentWhite":28,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":24,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"20.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":81.8,"schoolId":5060,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Travis Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Travis Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/travis-unified-school-district/travis-elementary-school/5060"}
