One of my students was unable to find transportation to school and had to walk about an hour to make it to school on time. When this student arrived they were very sweaty and upset about their appearance and self-conscious about how they smelled. I was able to retrieve his hygiene supplies so he could use the body wipes, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, and mouthwash to clean himself up in the bathroom before coming to class. This helped him start off his day on a positive note and allowed him to focus on learning instead of his embarrassment over his cleanliness. \r\n\r\n My students were surprised to see that we had received such a large quantity of hygiene supplies and they were excited to help unbox and organize all the donations. One of my homeless students even expressed that she was relieved to know that there were enough supplies for all students and that she would not feel hesitant to ask to use them now. A couple of my older students asked if they could use some of the items right away, and I was happy to tell them they could clean themselves up and then we could put their name on the used items and keep them in a safe spot that they could access as needed.\r\n\r\n Part of teaching at a community day school is to work on educating our population about their social-emotional development. We cover this topic every day where it fits in, but we have about 45 minutes of designated time every Friday where we cover these concepts and learn more about ourselves and others. The premise behind the curriculum we are using is that positive thoughts lead to positive actions, positive actions lead to positive feelings, and positive feelings lead to more positive thoughts. We are continuing to work on improving the self-concept for our at-risk students, which includes taking better care of their physical and mental health so that they have more positive feelings about themselves and others. Your donation will help them feel their best so they can do their best.","fullyFundedDate":1758636816469,"projectUrl":"project/from-basics-to-brilliance/9653925/","projectTitle":"From Basics to Brilliance","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Coker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6754054"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_45950","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":123,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":83,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":7,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":79,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"11 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":45950,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about George & Evelyn Stein High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"George & Evelyn Stein High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/tracy-unified-school-district/stein-high-school/45950"}
