The portable JBL speaker we received has already made an incredible difference in the extracurricular life of our school community. It has been a centerpiece to many of our LTA outdoor activities and after school events. Students and staff alike have commented on how much it has truly elevated the energy and engagement at every gathering.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the speaker, the supplies funded through your donation have supported a variety of school-wide events, from Freshman Tailgate, HOCO Carnival, and Trunk or Treat. These materials have helped us create welcoming, organized, and joyful experiences for our students and families. Because of your generosity, we can continue building meaningful traditions that strengthen our school culture and help every student feel valued.\r\n\r\nWe are deeply grateful for your kindness and belief in our mission. Over the years, I decided to change that. Now, instead of filling in blanks, my students dive into interactive challenges. They watch video clips, match them with the right vocabulary words, explain their reasoning, and even collaborate with classmates. They don't just memorize the words—they use them, speak them, and apply them.\r\nA few years ago, I took things up another level by launching schoolwide Scavenger Hunts. Armed with QR codes hidden around campus, students set off on an adventure to discover video clips, track down staff members, and unlock vocabulary clues in unexpected places. It's part mystery, part game, and all learning. The kids have a blast, staff members love being in on the fun, and most importantly, the students remember the words long after the test ends.\r\nThat's where your donation comes in. The clipboards you generously provided turned out to be the missing puzzle piece. Now, as students dash from one clue to the next, they have a sturdy surface to jot down their answers—no more awkward writing on walls or backpacks. It may seem small, but it makes the adventure smoother, easier, and way more fun. Thanks to you, the game feels more official, the kids feel more prepared, and the learning feels even more exciting.\r\nOn behalf of my students, thank you for helping transform vocabulary from a chore into an unforgettable adventure. Your clipboards are more than supplies—they're the tools that help make learning come alive.","fullyFundedDate":1750535033433,"projectUrl":"project/a-scavenger-hunt-awaits/9370149/","projectTitle":"A Scavenger Hunt Awaits","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Sankus","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7787942_orig.jpg?crop=2240,2240,x106,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1747410399918","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7787942"},{"teacherId":7787942,"projectId":9333889,"letterContent":"First of all, thank you so much for these wonderful books. I have taught this book many times over my career and once, bought a class set with my own money. We used them until the books literally fell apart. Thank you for making this donation of Speak books happen through your incredible generosity. \r\nI rotate methods of how we read the book for variety and to make sure the students are engaged. Sometimes, I do all the reading aloud because I do voices of the different characters and read with feeling and animation. The students say they enjoy it because when the students read aloud to the class, they either aren't loud enough or don't use the right expression. The second a student gets monotone in their reading, students tune out.\r\nAnother method I use for reading is Reading Groups of 4. Students get into groups of four and they all have a document on their laptops and books. They count off 1-4 and each person has a role like the following:\r\n1)Reader - they read one paragraph and the group discusses\r\n2)Questioner - they come up with a question from that paragraph\r\n3)Clarifier - they do their best to answer that question \r\n4)Predictor - they predict what will happen next in the story\r\n\r\n\tAll of what each person says is being written down in a grid on their document. This holds students accountable to pay attention to the reading and to practice their speaking and listening skills. Students are engaged and busy, and are able to discuss any questions or confusion they may be having in a safe group of four students. They then rotate roles for each new paragraph or passage they read.\r\n\tI love teaching Speak to my Freshmen and ELD students because both boys and girls enjoy and relate to it. It deals with many themes that high school students deal with every day. The book discusses bullying, ostracization - when none of your friends or anyone for that matter are speaking to you at all. It also deals with friendship issues, peer pressure and sexual assault. It also deals with how teachers can be instrumental to students who are having a tough time. We English teachers cover half of their Sex Ed their Freshmen year and many of these topics are covered there as well. The book ties in nicely with all of this. Wonderful discussions are derived as we read this book. It also deals with cliques, and all the different ones there are on a school campus. Each student can identify with a specific clique, character or situation in the book.\r\n\tThank you so much for donating a class set of the amazing book Speak to our school. I honestly can't thank you enough.","fullyFundedDate":1748458130372,"projectUrl":"project/novel-needed/9333889/","projectTitle":"Novel Needed","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Sankus","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7787942_orig.jpg?crop=2240,2240,x106,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1747410399918","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7787942"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_98143","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1654,"numTeachers":59,"percentFrplEligible":76,"percentAsian":32,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":18,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"28.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":75.6,"schoolId":98143,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about John C Kimball High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"John C Kimball High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/tracy-unified-school-district/kimball-high-school/98143"}
