Students can use different colors to show their thinking, solve problems in creative ways, and make their work feel more exciting and engaging. Something as simple as having a variety of colors has made a big difference in the way our students approach math.\r\n\r\nThe sidewalk chalk has allowed us to take learning outside and create hands-on math games that get students moving while they practice important skills. We can turn the pavement into number lines, counting games, fact fluency activities, and math challenges. Learning doesn't always have to happen sitting at a desk, and our students love that!\r\n\r\nThe games have been especially valuable for building fluency and counting skills. Students are able to practice these foundational skills repeatedly without feeling like they are simply doing more worksheets. They are playing, competing, laughing, and learning at the same time. Students tested their ideas, made changes when their structures fell, and tried again. They were learning important lessons about problem-solving, perseverance, and teamwork while having so much fun!\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue using these materials during STEM challenges as we explore shapes, structures, patterns, and how things are built.
