The floor cushions, lap desks, and red rocking chairs are in constant use during independent reading, writing workshops, and collaborative group work. One of our favorite projects recently was a nonfiction research unit. Students chose their own seating during independent research time, and I noticed a major increase in focus and engagement. Some students used lap desks and cushions to create cozy reading nooks, while others worked in pairs on the rocking chairs, sharing notes and discussing their findings. The flexibility has empowered them to choose the spaces where they learn best.\r\n\r\nTheir reaction was priceless—pure joy! There were cheers, wide eyes, and excited shouts of \"Can we really sit here now?\" The red floor rocking chairs were especially popular, with students rushing to try them out and instantly smiling as they gently rocked back and forth. Many students told me how comfortable and calming the new seating was, and one even said, \"This makes learning feel more fun.\" It was clear right away that these materials would have a big impact on how they feel in our classroom.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're diving into a creative writing unit where students are crafting their own short stories. The flexible seating gives them the freedom to find a space where they feel inspired and focused as they brainstorm, draft, and revise. Next, we'll be moving into a peer review phase, where students will share their stories and give one another feedback—again using our new seating to create comfortable discussion groups. These resources are helping foster a learning environment that feels student-centered, calm, and collaborative—and that wouldn't be possible without our amazing donors.","fullyFundedDate":1731940425369,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-learning-through-flexible-sea/8709663/","projectTitle":"Empowering Learning Through Flexible Seating","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Perez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8826689"},{"teacherId":9731308,"projectId":9059027,"letterContent":"First and foremost, thank you all for your generous contribution to my project. Because of all of you, my students have been able to benefit from the brand new portable speaker in our classroom. In today's generation, toddlers are constantly exposed to technology through an iPad, computer, or television, which can oftentimes become overstimulating for such young minds. The speaker has allowed us to sing and dance along to songs, learn new games, while having fun and still limiting screen time.\r\n\r\nI think my student's favorite part of the new speaker has been learning how to play musical chairs! It was a little tough at first, and we had some tears, but they have successfully learned how to play it and will ask to play almost daily! I love that the students get to engage with music but that there are also multiple benefits that come from learning the game, including improving listening skills, enhancing gross motor skills, boosting coordination, and promoting social skills and sportsmanship.\r\n\r\nThe speaker has also allowed us to play music during indoor and outdoor play, play calming music during small group activities, do yoga once or twice a week, learn about colors, shapes, letters, and numbers through songs, and so much more. We are so excited to finally have a speaker to incorporate music throughout our school day!","fullyFundedDate":1736940279540,"projectUrl":"project/engagement-through-music/9059027/","projectTitle":"Engagement Through Music","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Perez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9731308_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y304&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1736872585414","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9731308"},{"teacherId":9506410,"projectId":8651157,"letterContent":"I would like to start off by saying thank you for your donation. The books that were donated have been such a blessing for our class. Students have been eager to read the new chapter books as they include characters that interest them. Students have also been able to \"buddy read\" with a classmates because of the books we received. Students are able to read with a partner and engage with the story because they get to 'voice' the characters from their new favorite books. \r\n\r\nAll students have been able to enjoy the new books because not only are they able to read independently or with a buddy, they now have a new selection of read aloud stories. Students who love to read now have a wider selection of books to chose from so they can read to our class. Students have started to volunteer to read to their classmates because they have new books to choose from. Due to the new books we have received students are able to choose from short stories, comic book formatted books, as well as new chapter books. With this donation, students have been engaged more in reading and have been able to connect more with the stories as they build their fluency in reading.","fullyFundedDate":1731940505948,"projectUrl":"project/love-for-reading/8651157/","projectTitle":"Love for Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Escobar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9506410"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_32383","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":970,"numTeachers":34,"percentFrplEligible":70,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":23,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":62,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"28.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":73.3,"schoolId":32383,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Westpark Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Westpark Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/southern-kern-unified-school-district/westpark-elementary-school/32383"}
