We primarily use them during our math lessons to go over practice problems and to show work for classroom assignments. They allow students the freedom to mess up and correct mistakes with a simple swipe of the eraser, making math much less intimidating. My students know they have access to food when they are hungry or needing a pick me up. When I showed them my drawer of snacks, they were in shock. One exclaimed \"this will be the place to be if we're locked down for a long time,\" as disheartening as that statement is, the fact is that schools can cause anxiety because of the risks to students causing lockdowns. Knowing students will not starve if we are stuck for a long time is one way to reduce that anxiety. \r\n\r\nI also use the snacks as rewards for accomplishing a task or having good behavior. Just yesterday the students all were able to pick a snack from the drawer. My students enjoyed reading from the library this week! We had extra time on Wednesday morning, so I put on a fireplace video for ambience, and all 21 of my students settled in with their reading materials. My very chatty 8th graders spent a solid 15 minutes in silent reading time. I plan to have them continue this on Wednesday mornings with the hope of increasing stamina. In fact, they were so engrossed in their reading, I think they could have kept going if we hadn't run out of time. Two students were so interested in reading Hidden Figures and The One that they checked the books out to take home and finish reading. One student finished reading Hidden Figures in one night! \r\n\r\nThey really enjoyed having a selection of books to choose from. They were able to find a topic they were interested in and at their reading level. Many students do not have the stamina to read for extended periods.
