Also, they helped to leverage some of the other more economical products. Students felt empowered working daily in sketchbooks that they had made their own. Then at the end of the quarter they had a body of work they had created and a personalized sketchbook and practice they could take home and continue to work on beyond the classroom.\r\nThrough these materials we learned and practice daily drawing and self expression in artist sketchbooks and this practice is powerful. The covers were opportunities for individual self expression and a means for sharing their personal identity. The journals also gave them an opportunity to experience tracking the work they complete and new techniques they learn. \r\nCompleting the journals allowed students to take what they had created with them after completing the class. We enjoyed using the journal for both creating, drawing and for writing and learning new techniques exploring ideas and brainstorming. We created in the sketchbooks and planned and carried out projects. I enjoyed watching student growth through the making of the sketchbooks/journals and the filling of them everyday in class.\r\nLeaving class with a journal/sketchbook of filled pages is satisfying and validating for students.
