You provided a classroom set of the novel Frindle by Andrew Clements. Having their own copy of the novel to follow along with, mark with sticky notes the pages of text that spoke to them, or contained words they wanted to look up later has been an invaluable resource.\r\n Our class gathered each day after lunch on the carpet with our books as we took turns reading pages of the book. Students practiced reading with prosody, using different voices for the characters. We discussed how the characters reminded us of our own classmates or family members. We talked about how the main character's relationship with his teacher changed his life. My students have been extremely motivated to participate in learning about how to manage their classroom money. \r\n\r\nStudents in my class earn money for doing their classroom job, completing their homework, and for scoring proficient on their tests. This money is used to pay their desk rent, which causes them to have to choose to save their money or to risk having their desk bought by a more frugal student in the classroom. Once students have saved enough money, they can then buy their desk and no longer have to pay rent. \r\n\r\nAn important tool in this learning experience is the classroom store. Students, like all of us, are tempted to spend their money on the toys, games, and other objects in the store. If they do not choose wisely they risk not being able to pay their rent. Students rotate using the varying fidgets, such as the liquid bubblers, kinetic sand, and the wiggle feet cushions. The sand timers have been wonderful in supporting students transition, follow directions, and have breaks.\r\n\r\nThe headphones have been incredible to have a class set.
