My students have gained so much from being able to apply their mathematical and spelling skills through play! Even though they're in middle school, they still very much enjoy playing board games. Their spelling and vocabulary skills have improved through playing Scrabble. They try to play as often as they can! They've also gotten so much better at computing dollar amounts by playing Allowance. Whereas before they were struggling with adding and subtracting with decimals, most are now able to do so without calculators!\r\n\r\nI would say the biggest hit amongst my students is the class mini fridge. Students are now bringing lunch and snacks from home because they have a place to store it. We're also able to keep treats for those hot days and ice packs on hand. My students were so excited to have their own headset that also had a mic. They are now able to actually hear our online reading program without background noise distracting them, and are becoming interested in reading. My students are actively seeking out audio books. This is growth.\r\n\r\nNot only are they reading more, they're writing more. Because the headphones have mics attached to them, my students feel more comfortable accessing the speech-to-text feature on their Chromebooks.
