The shredder has become the centerpiece of this work—students collect scrap paper, sort it, and then take turns shredding. From there, the paper is bagged and delivered to school and district recycling bins, giving students a meaningful role in environmental stewardship and helping them understand the importance of reducing waste.\r\n\r\nWhen our shredder first arrived, the room was filled with excitement. Students crowded around to watch the first few sheets disappear and turn into fluffy strips. Many laughed, pointed, and immediately asked when it would be their turn. For students who thrive on sensory feedback, the sound and texture of the shredded paper quickly became a favorite classroom moment, turning a routine activity into something both fun and empowering.\r\n\r\nNext, we are expanding the shredder's role to connect with new projects. Students will be integrating shredded paper into compost bins to learn about soil health and food waste, repurposing it for eco-art and sensory projects, and even creating recycled paper \"starter kits\" for planting in our garden. By tracking how much paper we recycle each month, our students will see the real-world impact of their efforts. Your support has not only provided a tool but also inspired a sense of agency and responsibility, empowering our young adults to see themselves as caretakers of the planet.","fullyFundedDate":1748875765643,"projectUrl":"project/from-paper-to-purpose-recycling-in-acti/9353415/","projectTitle":"From Paper to Purpose: Recycling in Action","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp579855_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x648,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741454102783","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/burlingame-university"},{"teacherId":579855,"projectId":9149823,"letterContent":"Receiving these items has had a powerful and transformative impact on our classroom. These resources have filled a vital gap for students with more complex learning profiles—students who benefit from extra visual structure, sensory input, and hands-on learning opportunities to fully engage and succeed.\r\n\r\nThe visual supports have made a noticeable difference in helping students better understand their routines and expectations, leading to smoother transitions and more effective communication. Many students who once struggled to express themselves are now using these tools to share their wants, needs, and ideas more clearly—which has been incredible to witness.\r\n\r\nFine motor tools and life skills materials have allowed students to practice and complete tasks independently, and with that comes a deep and visible sense of accomplishment. The moment a student masters a task—zipping a bag, sorting materials, or finishing a sequencing activity—you can see the pride on their face. That sense of achievement has had a huge emotional benefit, boosting confidence and encouraging them to try new challenges with greater persistence.\r\n\r\nSensory tools have created calming and regulating experiences, helping students return to learning ready and focused. Games and manipulatives have brought energy and joy into our classroom, fostering problem-solving, peer interaction, and laughter.\r\n\r\nThese are more than just materials—they are tools of empowerment.
