These calculators have made an incredible difference, both in how my students learn and in how they feel about tackling challenging math concepts.\r\n\r\nMany of my students did not have access to calculators at home and could not afford to purchase one. This often made engaging with higher-level math materials a significant challenge. Now, with their own calculators, they can confidently approach problems involving essential math standards, such as order of operations, fractions, percentages, exponents, and radical expressions.\r\n\r\nWhile some students initially relied on their phones for calculations, they quickly saw how much more efficient and effective the dedicated scientific calculators were. The calculators allowed them to follow along with lessons and, in many cases, complete entire activities on their own. Students worked in small groups, comparing answers and collaborating to ensure they understood how to use the functions properly. Some students even took their calculators home to finish their work for homework, which was a great sign of how valuable they found the tool and how motivated they were to succeed.\r\n\r\nWhat about the new product is most exciting to my students?\r\nFor many of my students, this was their first experience using a brand-new calculator, and they were genuinely appreciative and grateful to have one of their own to use and keep, thanks to this DonorsChoose project. I also provided stickers so they could decorate and personalize their calculators, which added an extra layer of excitement. They quickly recognized how much easier and more efficient math could be with the right tool.\r\n\r\nAre there particular students who have especially warmed to this new technology?\r\nOne student, who had struggled with fractions and simplifying equations in the past, now feels confident handling these challenges with their calculator. Another student, who was used to relying on their phone, found the dedicated calculator much more effective, especially for working with exponents and radicals.\r\n\r\nA truly special moment was when students worked in small groups to complete the activity. They not only compared answers but also collaborated to troubleshoot and help each other navigate the functions on their calculators. When one student got stuck, others offered guidance, reinforcing their own understanding while supporting their peers. This teamwork and peer teaching was a powerful reminder of how students can learn from each other in a positive and supportive environment.\r\n\r\nFor my high-achieving students, the calculators opened up opportunities to explore more advanced topics, such as understanding undefined values and exploring the power of zero. They were able to test out hypotheses and deepen their understanding of these intriguing concepts, which helped foster their curiosity and love for math.\r\n\r\nThis project has provided my students with the tools to succeed while fostering collaboration, independence, and a greater sense of ownership over their learning.
