Initially, they relied on the pamphlet provided and didn't take long for them to create their own images using the tangrams. As they were exploring, students were able to the identify the different shapes in both English and Spanish. Their new word was parallelogram. I'm excited to bring them out again this coming week as we explore how a combination of shapes can form another. For now, students formed their creation with them and duplicated their image with paper shaped tangrams. Thank you for providing these amazing tools for my students. Others who love math are challenging themselves with problem-solving games that make learning fun. One student told me, \"It feels like the iPad is teaching just me!\" That sense of personalized attention has made a big difference for many of them.\r\n\r\nThe iPad has also given students the chance to be creators, not just learners. They record themselves explaining what they've learned, create digital art, and even share short videos about classroom topics. Regardless of their grade level, when listening to a story or reading their own book, they can now be accompanied by a reading buddy. Students are focused and are centered while in the library. Everyone understands that these are not toys, but serious reading companions. A student shared with me that he didn't want to find a book to check because he didn't know how to read and was embarrassed to buddy up with one of his classmates. I asked him to find a reading buddy and choose a picture book. Before long, he was talking to his buddy. Because there are so many components to this kind of writing, it can be overwhelming for any student, especially mine. Having students create their object or person that they will include in their writing will help to keep them focused. Without any guard rails, a student may begin their story with, for example, I got up in the morning, got dressed, ate, then went to school and on and on. What I am supporting students is to write about a specific event or time. Using playdough helps my students focus. One student created a peppa pig using a popsicle stick and the pink playdough. Now she was ready to tell why Peppa was so special to her. Another child, created a hand with playdough. For those students, it has made such a difference for them. It has been so much easier to open apps than signing in first to Google Classroom and much clunkier than using an iPad. I believe that my student are used to clicking on an app and seems to be much more appropriate for the younger students. Students from Pre-K to 5th grade can access apps with ease. They dont have to worry about remembering their emails and passwords. With the iPad, students are more engaged. Some students have chosen to communicate first with writing, but most will start with the watercolors to tell a story. My students are demonstrating their cooperative and organizational skills, not to mention their mathematical and literacy skills needed to create a piece of work.
