The gifts you donated have kept my hungry students fed when their families cannot or may have forgotten to pack them a snack. Many of them come from homes that are not stable (homeless), or low-income so they only eat school provided food. The snacks kept them full and satisfied on days where they may not have enough food or they are extra hungry. \r\n\r\nThe books were used as read aloud to include diversity and expand their minds. Often, kid who come from other backgrounds/genders (female) don't see themselves on television or media. I remember one of my student's eye lighting up when I read a book about a holiday from his culture. He is the only one in the class who celebrates that holiday and he felt so proud and happy his classmates had a chance to learn about it. Other goods helped the classroom run more smoothy and keep them healthy. We used the rainsticks and the wooden frogs right away. Our previous camera overheated and shut off constantly. It was also a painful task to write and work with the old camera as it would shake with any movement, making it impossible for kids to see and copy down anything. We use the ELMO for almost all the lessons in the classroom. The new camera does more than help the kids see; it connects the visual of the topics and ideas we are learning with their learning experiences internally. \r\n\r\nIn early September, we received your generous gift of the camera, and I set it up right away. My students were amazed at how clear the camera can project the work we did. They no longer had to struggle to wait for the camera to \"clear up\" or strain their eyes to see what was being projected. We use our camera everyday for all subjects: math, reading, English, social studies, science, and even little dance video for their stretch breaks. They love being able to see the videos clearly and following along with the dance moves and dances. The T.V. arrived two weeks ago and today is the first day we put it to use in the classroom because we had to wait for friends to help us set it up. The students were SO SO SO excited when I first turned on the T.V. I projected the activities that I normally would on the old screen and that would limit flexible seating. It was the first time the children can sit on the big rug and not have to move back to their chairs. Additionally, it also gave children the option of sitting in their regular seats to see the slides. It is such a wonderful gift for the children and they have so many ideas of what I should show to them. Mostly, I want to use it to project slides and video that they need to see during lessons. We either read aloud a \"Spot of Feeling\" that the class would benefit from during that week, or as it ties into other academic lessons we've had during that week. \r\n\r\nEach title raises the children's awareness about a specific emotion, how to maintain personal regulation with that feeling, AND above all, realize that classmates have those emotions too! The children are at that age where they can easily \"talk the talk\" but need a lot of continued reminders to \"walk the walk\". These books and Circle Time provides them the calm moments where they can process and practice these socio-emotional learning lessons, through sharing, discussions, and role-playing. \r\n\r\nEach week, the children eagerly anticipate the week's upcoming title. They are excited to meet new characters (ie emotions) and feel the acknowledgement they need from their circle.
