A heartfelt THANK YOU, to each of you for your kind donation towards my \"Gravity: It's About to Glow Down\" project. This is such an exciting way to introduce concepts about gravity, mass and acceleration. \r\n\r\nThe pvc pipes came in a big box a couple days after we returned from winter break and I wish you could have heard my students excitement as I dragged the box into our classroom! The other materials arrived shortly after and my students were too excited to wait for a full on Glow with Gravity party at the end of the month, so I brought the materials out to begin our exploration and experimenting. \r\n\r\nWe discussed what gravity was, why it's important and watched a short corresponding video before introducing in the ramps. We compared the textures between the smooth pvc tubes and the corrugated ones, making predictions on how they thought it would affect the cars and balls. \r\n\r\nIt was really awesome to see them learning together, sharing their ideas and manipulating the materials to test out their theories. We're looking forward to continuing our gravity and ramps investigation with a glow party and for the rest of the year! These materials will be enjoyed by students in the years to come. They've been having an amazing time learning with these new materials.\r\n\r\nI created a variety of activities to explore different science, engineering, art, and math concepts while supporting different levels of development and language skills with these materials. We've made batches of homemade playdough, new activities for our learning centers and taught our 5th grade buddies how to play Numberblock dominoes (a huge favorite)! These activities have sparked new ideas, encouraged collaboration with peers, and supported critical and abstract thinking, all while strengthening their fine motor skills in an engaging way. We are slowly building our STEAM bins and broadening our hands-on, messy activities, and these items have been amazing additions to our classroom. My students are making leaps and bounds in their learning because of you! We are truly grateful and future students will continue to benefit from these activities. Thank you again!! This was a very special project to me. Having the tools to help my students practice positive self talk as they work through new challenges is really beneficial in the early years of learning and creates a positive foundation for their academic careers. \r\n\r\nWe've been reading the growth mindset books together in whole group, paired with a series of short supporting videos, and then have a variety of discussions. Some are a quick round table of accomplishments, other discussions are longer and more in depth and it's been amazing to hear the children in my class really think about their learning and how they lift each other up. \r\n\r\nWe've incorporated the positive self talk into our morning routine. My students love their recorder buttons! Their smiles each time they hear their voices repeating their kindness or positive phrase. We keep the recorder buttons with their desk pets so students can access them whenever they want. One student recently asked to take her button to the doctors to remind herself that she was brave! It's wonderful that students are recognizing which tools work best for their needs. \r\n\r\nIt's my hope that these practices and experiences will be something they can draw upon when they move onto the next grade to help them persevere and continue to make leaps and bounds in their learning. These materials will benefit students in the years to come. This community service project has been in motion for a couple of months, starting with reading together and then a whole group student brainstorm about why books are special to them. It branched off into who they could share books with and a plan to collect, organize and then distribute to the community. The students were overjoyed to hear they would have a special place to share their efforts year round!!\r\n\r\nStudents have been so excited to extend their efforts into the community and worked hard before the break to put their ideas into action. They're looking forward to continuing their work through the rest of the school year. I delivered items to a local community resource center over winter break, with plans to deliver more both to them and a local senior wellness center. The resource center was so grateful and shared how the books came at a perfect time to be given out during the holidays. \r\n\r\nHaving a permanent space to share a love of books has instilled a sense of excitement and pride in all our students and it's beautiful to see them spread kindness one book at a time. I know this is an activity that will continue with students in the years to come and increase access to quality books within our neighborhood and surrounding community. I'm sure each time a student picks up a book or walks past a Little Library that they'll be reminded that a small act of kindness can have a big impact. We will be forever grateful. My students are ecstatic every time they see me pull out our coding bots. The technology portion of STEAM activities is typically one of the trickier aspects to incorporate in a tangible way for this grade level and having coding bots designed for young scholars with color coded directional materials has been a game changer!!\r\n\r\nTo give you a quick idea - the coding sets come with a coding bot, remote control and coding cards with directional arrows. I began with whole group lessons and we are working our way towards coding in small, independent groups. The students begin by each choosing a card and then take turns inputing their code on the remote and laying out each arrow as we go, until we have a whole string of commands. From there we run the bot, have a discussion, troubleshooting as needed (this is where the coding cards are vital to seeing and understanding how swapping out just a couple simple commands can help program our bot in a more productive way) and from there we plug in the new code. We're slowly adding in new challenges for our bots to complete and are really looking forward to gaining more confidence and knowledge in these coding adventures.\r\n\r\nThe \"Thoughtful Bot\" book series has been a beautiful addition to talking about different social-emotional topics in an engaging way, after we've worked with our coding bots. It's a dream when you can tie everything together!\r\n\r\nThis project has brought so much joy, laughter and curiosity to my students - I can barely keep up with their questions! I can't wait to see what these future computer scientists and robotic engineers do next!
