My students were excited to receive them. I did not make a big announcement when they first arrived. Instead, I started handing them out as students requested one. Word spread quickly about the bookmarks and more students started asking for them. I appreciated being able to offer them a choice—funny, land or ocean animals or artistic designs. I could tell it made them feel special. My goal is to make reading exciting for all of them and having fun bookmarks that they can choose themselves is part of that. \r\nDuring the last week of library, I gave each student a bookmark along with information about the city's public library summer reading program. So many were excited and had a hard time choosing. One student, who had received one the previous week, asked if he had to return the old one. \"No,\" I told him. \"You get keep it.\" \r\n\r\nTwo students were absent that week and when I ran into them I asked if they wanted to choose bookmarks. These are 6th graders, who are not always the most enthusiastic library patrons. One announced halfway through the year that he would no longer be checking out books. (He did not fully keep that promise, thankfully.) The other was not allowed to check out books, despite a strong desire to. I had been visiting their classroom to collect late books, and both chose to accompany me back to the library to choose their bookmark. The boy could not choose between an orca and a night sky. \"Keep them both,\" I told him. \"You might need two.\" The girl was equally excited to choose her own bookmark. \r\n\r\nThank you for turning my ragtag collection of bookmarks into something special that kids love. I now have so many bookmarks that they should last for several school years. A bookmark may seem small, but it's an important reading tool and I'm grateful for having a supply that students love.","fullyFundedDate":1776024633364,"projectUrl":"project/fun-bookmarks-for-the-library/10110345/","projectTitle":"Fun Bookmarks for the Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Joanna","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10438748"},{"teacherId":4785436,"projectId":9421992,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous support in providing our classroom with the Visualizing and Verbalizing kit for comprehension. Your contribution has had a powerful and immediate impact on my students' learning and confidence as readers.\r\n We use the Visualizing and Verbalizing resources during small-group reading intervention. One particularly meaningful moment happened during a narrative comprehension lesson. After reading a short passage, students used the picture-to-picture prompts and structure words to create detailed mental images. For the first time, several students who typically struggled to explain what they read were able to clearly describe the setting, characters, and actions using complete, organized language. One student proudly said, \"I can see it in my head now,\" which perfectly captured the program's purpose.\r\n When students were first introduced to the materials, their reaction was excitement mixed with curiosity. They were drawn to the visuals and eager to use the imagery language. Many students who usually feel frustrated during comprehension tasks immediately showed increased engagement. The concrete visuals and clear structure helped them feel successful, which boosted their confidence and willingness to participate.\r\n Thanks to you, our next steps involve deepening comprehension by moving from sentence-level imagery to longer passages and content-area texts. Students are currently working on turning their mental images into oral retellings and written responses, strengthening both comprehension and expressive language.\r\nYour generosity has opened the door for my students to truly understand what they read, not just decode the words on the page. We are incredibly grateful for your investment in their learning and growth.","fullyFundedDate":1758814418581,"projectUrl":"project/building-strong-readers-from-tk-to-8th-g/9421992/","projectTitle":"Building Strong Readers from Tk to 8th Grade!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hughes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4785436_orig.png?crop=254,254,x8,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741025325178","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4785436"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_95708","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":441,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":69,"percentAsian":17,"percentBlack":11,"percentWhite":15,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":39,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":1,"percentMultiracialImputed":7,"gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":69.2,"schoolId":95708,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about John Still Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"John Still Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/sacramento-city-unified-school-district/john-h-still-elementary-center/95708"}
