Nothing gets past the notice of my students, and the new books, games, manipulatives, and other materials are no exception. They eagerly dove into the books during our buddy reading time and now the books are worn with many repeated readings and lots of love. The games continue to be a big hit, as students get to play together, flexing their social skills, while practicing math skills. \r\n\r\nThe large metal clipboards become outdoor desks for the kids on our bimonthly library and park field trips. They work with a parent volunteer in small groups to create math story problems using the nature they see around them, recording their findings on their math logs. They write in their journals to a prompt that I've created, one that often is about an aspect of the season. Without these outdoor desks, we wouldn't be able to take our learning with us!\r\n\r\nThese days, the kids are busy hearing stories from America's many indigenous traditions- stories of courage, resilience, and overcoming adversity. We are beginning to learn how to form cursive letters, using our imaginations to guide our hands. The second graders are busy making comic strips and stories with their friends. Finally, we are moving in so many ways to make our math lessons come alive. It is a vibrant classroom!\r\n\r\nWithout your continued support, we just couldn't do as many cool activities together. We are certainly flying g higher thanks to your generosity.\r\n\r\nReading quality books to and with children is essential in developing literacy skills and for launching conversations around identity, friendship, acceptance, and our feelings. The books you provided sit on our window sill, ready for any reader to grab. One particular student with severe ADHD is able to sit quietly during these read alouds, obviously totally absorbed in the stories. In fact, one of his strategies for self-regulation is to grab a book.\r\n\r\nThe math games and manipulatives are a total hit.
