With the whiteboards and dry erase markers, students use them daily. They use them to solve math problems, work out rough drafts for their writing compositions, practice and correct spelling, expand sentences/ideas, work in collaboration in group projects, plan out their thoughts, and demonstrate their knowledge about a concept. With the colored pencils, students use these tools weekly (if not daily) for book reports, posters, presentations, and art-infused language arts and math activities. They also use them to edit their writings, learn spelling concepts, highlight keywords and ideas from texts to answer comprehension questions, color code the steps in multi-step math problems, and practice handwriting. An additional unanticipated way all these learning tools are utilized is in the sensory center. Here, students go when deregulated to draw, write, or reflect. Having a whiteboard, dry erase pens, and pencils gives them tools to use to re-regulate, find solutions, and make amends. \r\n\r\nOne specific project the students have been working on in 5th grade is their state reports. Each student is assigned a state to research and then synthesize that information into a visual to present along with an oral report. Students have used the colored pencils to underline key concepts from passages about their state (i.e. its capital, its symbols, its natural resources, major landmarks...etc). They then take that information and create a rough draft. Whiteboards and dry erase pens have allowed them to create word banks, expand their sentences, and plan out their ideas and posters. The color pencils then become the tools to bring color and details to the posters as well as ways to embellish their words. The pride they have in being able to create something of beauty to share before their peers just radiates off them. You help put that confidence and joy in their hearts by gifting them these learning materials.\r\n\r\nLooking into the future, the 6th grade is going to be learning about Greek history and will be researching about a god or goddess. I plan to use these same tools to help bring their presentations/posters to life. In 4th grade, we will learn about equivalent fractions and we plan to use all these tools to illustrate what that means and what it looks like. The first and second grades are solving spooky word problems this week and we'll use the whiteboards and markers to draw ghosts and pumpkins to either add or subtract. All in all, in just this snap shot, I hope you see how much the students will use and continue to use these wonderful tools you have given.\r\n\r\nThank you again so very much. Our hearts are filled with gratitude. You have gifted students who sometimes feel like they are behind or don't feel like they're good enough the ability to suddenly hold their heads high and feel proud about their work. Thank you a million times over.","fullyFundedDate":1755055901328,"projectUrl":"project/school-materials-to-unleash-creativity-a/9556917/","projectTitle":"School Materials to Unleash Creativity and Engagement in Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kindle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8803025_orig.jpg?crop=480,480,x0,y80&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1707609159154","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8803025"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_5150","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":329,"numTeachers":16,"percentFrplEligible":28,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":66,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"20.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":93.5,"schoolId":5150,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about McNear Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"McNear Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/petaluma-city-schools/mcnear-elementary-school/5150"}
