I am finally able to make fun and engaging activities for my students in bright colors which is so helpful to my 2 students with visual impairments. I have also been able to print colorful communication icons that are so helpful in and out of the classroom. My students were very happy using the sensory fidgets. Some students shared that it calmed them and that they were able to focus. What I appreciated the most is that they were able to share fidgets and have fun together. It's important for students to interact with each other, especially my student population who are special education students who often isolate themselves.\r\n\r\nWhen I took the fidgets out, the students were so happy specially because they were a variety. It felt like it was Christmas in my classroom. They were surprised we received a donation. I explained that we will be using the fidgets in our small reading groups. Each student selected a fidget of their choice. \r\n\r\nOverall, having fidgets available to students calms them down. Students look forward to trying one a different day. Many of them have never seen a popcorn machine this large. The students immediately wanted to take turns turning on the buttons, flipping the popper, and scooping the popcorn. \r\nNow, every Wednesday the students look forward to having their turn to take on different jobs with machine as well as serving the popcorn to their peers at lunchtime. It has been so fun to watch them take on leadership roles, grow their confidence, and become more social for many of them. The students love to cook and exert their independence, especially through cooking something like pancakes that they love to eat!\r\nThey were so excited when the office staff brought in the big boxes, especially the refrigerator! They all got a chance to open things up, take them out, and put them away. That really gave them a sense of ownership and responsibility as they were being so careful when they were putting everything away.\r\nThank you again for supporting our classroom. Students couldn't believe they were able to enjoy these cool materials and that they would be able to come to a class that allowed them the flexibility to process and learn in a non-traditional way and that it's okay. Students look forward to seating that allows them to move their feet or a chance to sit in another type of seat. \r\n\r\nStudents continue to enjoy the small items as weekly prizes for group participation and students of the week who demonstrate the character strengths of heart, will and mind through the week. Students in ELD do not have the opportunity to enjoy other elective classes like band, choir, guitar, art or dance. Our ELD students benefit from hands on learning experiences in our class and that includes the art, projects and supplemented experiences that align with the class core content. When receiving these materials, our students lit up with joy and excitement. For example, students now have headphones to engage in their online grammar lessons and, for struggling readers and those with disabilities, help have curricular text read aloud through our online textbook.
