I often look for books that not only connect to literacy skills but also give students a window into a very different time and way of life. Farmer Boy does exactly that. The story of Almanzo Wilder's childhood on a 19th-century farm has given my students a chance to imagine what it was like to grow up with chores, responsibilities, and traditions that are so different from their own. It has sparked thoughtful discussions about work ethic, family values, and the importance of perseverance, conversations I didn't expect eight-year-olds to take so seriously, yet they did.\r\n\r\nWhat has surprised me most is how quickly my students connected to Almanzo's world, even though it feels far removed from theirs. Many of them live in suburban neighborhoods and are surrounded by technology, but when we read about Almanzo plowing fields or caring for animals, they lean in with genuine curiosity. They compare his chores with their own, and more than once I've had students tell me they went home and offered to help with dishes, laundry, or yard work after being inspired by the book.\r\n\r\nWhat I value most is how Farmer Boy has given us opportunities to weave in lessons about gratitude and resilience. In a time when instant gratification is the norm, my students were fascinated by how Almanzo and his family worked hard for simple joys, whether it was a homemade treat or the pride of finishing a tough task. These moments naturally led to classroom reflections on patience and appreciation, qualities that are so important for kids to practice in today's fast-paced world.\r\n\r\nUltimately, Farmer Boy has become more than just a read-aloud in my classroom. It has been a springboard for character education, family discussions, and even writing projects where my students compared their lives to Almanzo's. Watching their understanding grow has been a reminder of why I love teaching: books have the power to connect us across time and place, and they give my students the tools to see beyond their own world.","fullyFundedDate":1744226223322,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-history-to-life-reading-farme/9104758/","projectTitle":"Bringing History to Life: Reading, Farmer Boy for Young Readers!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Schaeffer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1728010_orig.jpg?crop=539,539,x249,y51&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1739494673860","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/schaefferlearning"},{"teacherId":7539439,"projectId":9222173,"letterContent":"Your generous donations have made it possible for my students to be successful!
