Instead of feeling just like another old book, the graphic novel turns Orwell's dystopian world into something they can actually see. The visuals bring Big Brother's creepy surveillance and the world of Oceania to life, helping students really feel the tension and mood of the story. For many students who get overwhelmed by long, dense novels, this version is a game-changer. The mix of pictures and text keeps them interested and makes big themes easier to understand. \r\n\r\nThe graphic novel also gives students new ways to analyze the story. They can look closely at panels to see how choices like color, shading, and angles affect the mood. Plus, comparing the graphic novel with parts of the original text helps them think about how different formats tell the same story in different ways. This has especially helped students with learning needs and second language learners. \r\n\r\nOverall, having this version of 1984 has made a seventy-six-year-old novel feel fresh, relevant, and meaningful for today's high school students. It helps them understand a classic story in a way that feels accessible, engaging, and connected to the world they live in now. Since receiving the materials, my students and I have been diving into the current event articles each month, using them not only to stay informed but to build critical thinking and discussion skills. One standout project was a recent classroom debate series, where students chose articles on controversial topics from the magazine, researched both sides, and presented well-structured arguments. The high-interest content made them more engaged and confident in voicing their opinions—many of them referencing facts and viewpoints they hadn't considered before.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first opened the magazines, their excitement was genuine. Many reluctant readers commented that it felt like they had access to \"real-world\" topics beyond typical textbook materials. For many, it was their first time reading a publication tailored to their age group, and they were shocked by how relevant the articles were. Seeing their enthusiasm as they flipped through the pages and marked up sections for later discussion was rewarding to see.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next project builds on the skills they've gained so far. Students will be working on a \"Global Perspectives\" assignment, where they'll each select an international issue covered in Upfront, and conduct further research to present to the class.\r\n\r\nThanks to your support, they've not only gained access to quality journalism but have also developed stronger research, analysis, and communication skills. Your generosity has opened up new opportunities for them, and we're so grateful you've been part of their learning journey.","fullyFundedDate":1733175860039,"projectUrl":"project/informational-and-high-interest-reading/8585684/","projectTitle":"Informational and High Interest Reading Options for High School Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Clay","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2567800_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1471978610696","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2567800"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_74161","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":3382,"numTeachers":131,"percentFrplEligible":54,"percentAsian":10,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":29,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":41,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"25.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":74161,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Vista Murrieta High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Vista Murrieta High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/murrieta-valley-unified-school-district/vista-murrieta-high-school/74161"}
